-Let’s clear something up from a couple entries ago: I was being hyperbolic. I am finding a whole lot of awesome books at the library. However, in any genre you get bad or lazy or assholish writers, and a disproportionate number of these like to put in scenes of sexual violence not for story purposes, but because they can’t think of anything else. These books may look quite a lot like the books by good writers on the outside, and when that's the case I have to open them up to find out what they’re like.

-That said, book recommendations are always welcome! But I have quite a long list of books to try out already, so I can’t guarantee I’ll ever get to these books.

-I had to refuse to go to the Yarn Place with Mom thist morning. I have a whole stack of art junk sitting around waiting for me to art with it already. Bead stuff, chainmail stuff, cord stuff, sewing stuff … If I were capable of hyperfocusing, I would have my own damn Etsy store by now.

-I did manage to make Loke a T-shirt out of one of my old ones. It’s not bad for a first effort, but I do need practice in this new (to me) technique. I managed mostly to line up the hems provided, but the shirt is a little lopsided. I wore this shirt a lot, so the fabric was not sturdy—a couple of times it tore easily. But the biggest issue is the neckline—if you’re going to make a pullover shirt for a doll, the neckline has to be big, because dolls always have huge heads, and figuring out the width of the shoulders and the sleeves wasn’t easy. I think it’ll work better next time.

Photobucket
Also, Loke may eat your soul, but you can't deny she looks fabulous in turquoise.

-I've come up with a way to shut my brain up at night when it's compulsively worrying instead of going to sleep: I write a list of every worry I have in a few words, then tell myself I can deal with it tomorrow. It seems to be working ...

-Swimming is nice, but sometimes I kinda wish I could plug in the iPatch and swim along to some music—perhaps flick on my Mermaids playlist, as long as I’m in the water.* But on the other hand, while white noise usually bothers me, the weirdness of underwater noise is kind of nice. I love the sound around me when I exhale.

-I keep having small children in the pool and the locker room throwing me wide-eyed glances when my back is to them. I figured it was just the usual small-kid paranoia of Strangers, until it suddenly occurred to me that I have a tattoo on my spine. Good luck figuring out what it says, small children!

-Finally saw The Shining. Not bad, for a Kubrick film. But my favorite bit was definitely the part where Shelley Duvall discovers just what’s in Jack’s magnum opus, and then just keeps digging through the manuscript. You’d think she’d pick a few key bits-beginning, two or three middle parts, end—in the pile and get the idea, but instead she checks every page. “Well, the last forty pages were all the same, but I wonder if page 41 is different …”

*Alternatives: The Giant Bloated List Of Favorites, The Pirate Playlist and The NERRRRRD Playlist. You have no idea how many geek songs I own.

So one of the hazards of working at a Liberry: I have stacks of books all over my room.

At least I’m not buying them, though, and the space they take up ’round here is temporary. Man, I love me some Liberry.

Anyway, I’m sitting around reading books when I’m not trying to write them for the last couple of days, so not much bloggy thoughtfulness. Instead, you get a picture of Kyōko in her new school uniform:

Photobucket

I still need to get her some good socks.

I tried to model it after images of actual uniforms I found online. The pleats in the skirt were tremendous fun, but I think they already need ironing again.

Figures I do the short-sleeved one and now it’s winter, too.

Back to the books!

Oh, and I made some stuff weeks ago and never got around to sharing!

This is my new hobby—cords. You take seven various ribbons or smaller cords or strings of beads or whatever, and you pretty much tie them in a complicated knot. I’m considering making myself a belt if I can find long enough ribbons, but for now I’ve found a great use for them!

Photobucket
Daja looks darn good in orange, doesn’t she? I get the distinct impression she likes more manly clothes, which in this case suggest shirt and tunic. She probably doesn’t wear this in the smithy, though.

This is actually two separate tops, and looks really spiffy.

Hey, dudes!

[livejournal.com profile] ellenmillion’s Torn World is up and running and looking for contributors! It’s a cyberfunded creativity project where, writers, artists, nerds, etc. can engage in sandbox play—including stories, art, worldbuilding, and roleplay.

Right now we’re looking for people to help build it. I spent a while hammering out some of the language with [livejournal.com profile] ysabetwordsmith, and we’re still working on that. And I’m guessing that any other areas of expertise would be more than welcome to offer their two cents. But I’ll let Ellen explain a little more. It’s been fun so far—hope y’all enjoy it!

Amelia Presents: How To Make A Good Cup Of Tea
Featuring: Her New Silly Teapot

This is a tea kettle.

Photobucket

Tea snobs make a big hairy deal out of this thing, saying that it’s so damn much better than a microwave, it’s the only proper way to make tea, it’s actually God’s current incarnation on Earth, etc.. “Oh, tea snobs,” the non-snobs think, “what is wrong with the microwave? It gets the water just as hot.”

Yes. But my friends, there is more to tea than hot water. And that is why a scene like this makes a good tea snob bury their face in their hands:

Photobucket

“But what more is there?” I hear you cry. Ah, my friends, you don’t know the half of it. To make a real cup of tea, here’s what you need:

Wait, wait! Don’t run screaming yet! I know this looks complicated, but do not fear, for I am with you. And as an avid Proper Sort Of Tea Drinker once said in large, friendly letters,

Well, it’s been a bit longer than I expected, but I finally have [livejournal.com profile] gondolinchick01’s Christmas-ish present ready! Only a month and a few days late—better than never, eh?

Meet Tris, a decidedly not American Girl!

Photobucket
This is Trisana Chandler, from Tamora Pierce’s Circle Of Magic and The Circle Opens series and companion books. In her world, magic is an everyday phenomenon, a skill some people are born with but have to develop. While her world has a somewhat medieval level of nonmagic technology, magic is used to enhance it so that they can use things like security systems and prosthetic limbs.

As I said, I wasn’t planning on a costume this year, but suddenly I’m hanging out with my friend Jess, and you can never count on anything with her—you don’t know what you’re doing with Jess until after the fact. So I wound up invited to a Halloween part, and I suddenly needed a costume.

So! I took an idea I’d been toying with for a completely different reason, and turned it on myself. I found some tremendously ugly green fabric and tore apart one of Dad’s old lab coats to use as a pattern. A little hair and some awful makeup later, and guess who I was!

Finally!

It’s been a month since I went out and got the doll.

The creation so far has involved some serious research—nine books by Tamora Pierce, all reread FOR RESEARCH OF COURSE.

Also, some hazardous chemicals got involved.

But now, Super Secret Awesome Doll Project FTW is ready to be revealed!

As you all know, I have a serious obsession with MST3k, or Mystery Science Theater 3000. And in order to express that obsession, and because I had a few French hooks left after making my silly little Super Mario power-ups, I decided to make myself a pair of Tom Servo earrings out of Sculpey. I would have made one Servo and one Crow, but Crow would be hell to sculpt at that size, and anyway everyone knows there are multiple Servos, so two makes sense.

And here they are!

On CSI Night the great and powerful  [profile] chibicharibdys showed up with Bob-omb earrings. Bob-omb earrings. They were extraordinarily cool, and they inspired me to do something I’ve been toying with doing for a while anyway.

I made myself Super Mario Earrings.

I went with Mushroom, Fireflower, and Starman. Since I’ve got three holes in my ears,* the trinity of power-ups worked perfectly. And so I set to work!

*I used to have four, but I got tired of having a small, perpetually infected and inflamed keloid in my right ear’s cartilage. And don’t you piercing aficionados start on how I should have taken better care of it. I took fucken excellent care of it. I got it from a certified hand-piercing hollow-needle place from an expert and washed it and salt watered it and petted it and gave it its fruit snack every day at four. The truth is my skin just seized upon any excuse to inflame and complain.

I keep starting an entry and realizing it’s boring. It’s been a sand-shoveling couple of weeks with very little in the way of interesting events, but I have done a few projects. So instead of boring you with a long entry,  I will give you the illustrated version of my week or so:

WARNING: The Surgeon General has determined that the following entry contains dolls. Pediophobes are warned away from the cut.

And now, a linkspam post! Also more Transformers at the end, courtesy of my bastard enabler brother, who creates a fan-feedback-loop with me. We actually went to see that movie again on Tuesday night. What did you chumps go see, Harry Potter?!

Link The First: The Latest in Best Thing Ever. Seriously. I wish I’d known about the the Rubber Duckie Science Fleet long ago. (Provided by [profile] thewrongcrowd.)

Link the Second: A silly little craft project I did last week. It’s for my dolls, but there are no dolls in it. There are, however, more rubber ducks.

A Link To The Past: The greatest cartoon of all time turns fifty this week. I’m surprised that so many people haven’t seen it. I thought that everybody knew that the only correct words to “Ride of the Valkyries” were “Kill da wabbit! Kill da wabbit! Kill da WABBIT!”

The Transformers Part: My Other Car Is An Autobot.  Inspired, I believe, by Emily's idea.  And my brother and I decided on the jobs the Autobots must get in order to keep their role as
