Hey, dudes!

[livejournal.com profile] ellenmillion’s Torn World is up and running and looking for contributors! It’s a cyberfunded creativity project where, writers, artists, nerds, etc. can engage in sandbox play—including stories, art, worldbuilding, and roleplay.

Right now we’re looking for people to help build it. I spent a while hammering out some of the language with [livejournal.com profile] ysabetwordsmith, and we’re still working on that. And I’m guessing that any other areas of expertise would be more than welcome to offer their two cents. But I’ll let Ellen explain a little more. It’s been fun so far—hope y’all enjoy it!

Hey, book nerds!

The Grand High Bibliophile [livejournal.com profile] queenlyzard has been putting together a community for … well, for book nerdery! It’s been revving up the past couple of months, and the plan is to make it into a place to swap book recommendations and answer questions that will hopefully start discussions on various books.

So if you’re interested, check out [livejournal.com profile] bookaddiction. We could always use more nerds.
bloodyrosemccoy: (TYRANNOSAURS IN F14S!)
I've had really no idea what to say about the great fandom race meltdown that's been going on for a few months, since everything I came up with seemed redundant. Then it occurred to me that instead of adding to the pointless noise, I could direct you to some of the cool noise. So pay no attention to me; head on over to [livejournal.com profile] foc_u to check out some interesting discussion and some really rockin' nerds.

And in case you missed it the first time around, I also recommend heading to [livejournal.com profile] verb_noire, an e-publishing community/company for stories with PoC protagonists. I am pimping it today partly because it is the day you get your first glimpse of the cover of a book by a certain totally fabulous writer, and hopefully in a few days you will also be able to download the book itself! I have not read this book, but I assure you, with Tasha Campbell you cannot go wrong.

My sister discovers the shocking twist in M. Night Shyamalan’s The Happening.

Now before you ask, “Dear god, woman! Why the hell did you watch that?” I say unto you: if you have watched the MST3k version of Manos: The Hands Of Fate, you cannot judge me!* We were doing the same thing here!

Which turned out to be a good thing, since the movie? Is M. Nigh Unwatchable without the extra audio track.**

*And if you have watched the non-MST3k version of Manos, I say unto you: how is the food at Arkham Asylum?

**My favorite part is the reason the main character and his wife are estranged: she had some tiramisu with some guy who is now STALKING her. Apparently, this makes her a hoor.

Happy being married, [profile] kittikattie!  I must remember to send her her present before it becomes an anniversary present (I'm already late), but for now the only gift I can give is a well-deserved Blog Pimp O’ The Unspecified Time Block!  For you must all know that [profile] kittikattieis a renaissance girl, who writes and draws and sews (god damn she’s good at sewing) and has some really fascinating and fun insights into American Girl dolls. Also, she plays video games!  She is possibly one of the more badass people I know. And she has opinions—gloriously angry and pointed opinions! You all love those, I’m sure.

So go congratulate her on her wedding!  Just don’t send her chocolate, because if you kill her, I will have to track you down.

Blog Pimp O’ The Moment!

If there’s one person who can articulate the wonders of books, aliens, archaeology, and cephalopods in both art and the written word, that person is [personal profile] chairman_wow. As one of those individuals interested in everything, Hellen is an unrepentant nerd/geek and, to borrow a phrase from Terry Pratchett, she is her own distraction. Also, she plans to get a steampunk houseboat when she gets the money, and she will sit on the roof in her top hat sipping tea. I am invited to join her whenever my planet-hopping spaceship runs out of coal, and I get to wear spats! Someone with plans like that deserves a look, don’t you agree?

Also, it has recently come to my attention that [personal profile] chairman_wowis easily confused by paper. But we all have our kryptonite, don’t we?

Today’s blog delves deep into the seedy underbelly of the world of a middle-class teenager on the east side of Salt Lake City.** This is the world of my sister, [profile] sunshine_shaman, who spends her time accidentally rebelling against the society she’s stuck in by having a personality, and spends the rest of her time writing psychological thrillers and westerns and playing various Super Mario-themed games.  She’ll be off to UC Santa Cruz in a few months, and will pick up the saga of Adventures In College when I leave off. If you find yourselves intrigued by someone who will attend a whitebread prom in a whitetail tux and a fake mustache, then I urge you to give her a visit.

*“Day” in this case means “whenever I remember/can be buggered.”

Today’s pimped blog is ... *drumroll; spotlights whirling on curtains* ... [profile] ishidashipper, whose posts always make me smile. Ish’s posts are often exuberantly informal and run the gauntlet from ruminations on the ideals of beauty to (politely cut) picspams of band members who need more obsessive fanning. If you like intelligent commentary on social mores, bandom, or funky hats, Ish is the blogger for you.

[personal profile] ysabetwordsmith has started a meme!  And it’s kind of a neat one, too:

1) Pick a friend who writes a great LiveJournal and would welcome more traffic on their blog.

2) Write a post on your blog that links to their blog and describes what makes it worth visiting.

3) Encourage your audience to go check it out.

4) Audience members who do the meme are also encouraged to copy their own Pimp-A-Friend message as a reply to the original post.

5) This makes a good periodical activity for a networking blog or a community.

It’s a good idea! I’m going to periodically start pimping out entertaining, interesting, cool people whose blogs I’ve been enjoying, and maybe explain why I like them.

So! First up, then, would be [personal profile] kjpepper, the queen of bullet lists. Her journal is day-to-day stuff—life, the universe, and everything—and she has a great knack for observational comedy, irony, and the all-important snark. She even manages to make her bad news insightful. You get to follow her adventures with health, relationships, books, Nerf-enhanced TV, and of course underwear, as well as periodic videos of swearing newscasters.  Go! You know you like the bullets!

Now to figure out who I’m going to recommend next.  Damn, there are so many good ones.  How do I choose?
