The traditional: Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, MY GOD THE YAMS, and green beans with mushrooms. Nobody drank wine because Dad’s on call, and he’s really the wine guy—I always drink grape juice anyway, like I’m Mormon or some shit, and if Dad doesn’t bring out the wine Mom forgets about it.

What did you have for dinner tonight?

(Yes, not just the US folks … I like hearing about food, okay?)

Duck a l'orange, home made mashed potatoes, corn spoon-bread and homemade macaroni and cheese. Oh and we had spinach dip and deviled eggs as an appetizer. Realized as we sat down to eat that a vegetable side was never even considered.

Oh and also our duck? We literally had to TRADE IT IN because we opened the butcher's wrap and it had FEET and it's HEAD still attached. I shrieked like a baby and ran from the kitchen the minute I saw the feet - never saw the head at all. We took it to Whole Foods and they took pity on us and gave us a fully dressed duck in exchange, even though we didn't buy it there. Beware specialty butchers - when they send you a whole duck they are NOT kidding around.

They probably thought that's what you wanted. A lot of people would use those parts.

Actually most people I know would be just as surprised and horrified to discover extremities on their meat. :-p I understand those parts are good for stuff, I just don't know how to properly remove all the bits and bobs, not to mention not having time for it. The weird thing is, we looked online for instructions to help us out but all we could find we're instructions on quartering a duck or basically going from alive to the point we were at. My faith in the helpfulness of the Internet was definitely shaken.

Ooh! Sounds good. (Spinach dip counts as a vegetable, right?)

I, too, would not know what to do with a fully equipped duck. I am at a bit of a loss with dressing a turkey, to be honest. Good thing I have family members who do it for me!

Wellllll... I had a delicious traditional turkey meal that I helped REALLY HARD with. ;)

It would never have gotten into the kitchen from the deck without your help. Integral, that contribution.

Here at the main meal we had turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, and cranberry stuff. Later on, open faced turkey sandwiches and cheeseball and crackers were had. For dessert, there was apple pie and ice cream.

I love leftover turkey sandwiches!

Your dinner sounds almost exactly like ours, but sub out yams for squash, which mom diced and cooked in some kind of amazing oil. And salad. No wine for me, either, because a) not a fan, and b) the older brother made us all Pisco Sours earlier, and I was still recovering. :P

Dad's been after me to join him in his wine-tasting, but I dislike alcohol--it all tastes like various flavors of bad to me.

Squash was last week--we roasted a pumpkin. Maybe next year I'll have winter squash of my own to enjoy, too!

Turkey, Mashed Potatoes, some really good stuffing with lots of Pecans, Carmelized Onions, Fried Onions and Mushrooms, and lots of gravy over all of it.

I just realized that we didn't do Cornbread, which is a damn shame. I'll have to make Cornbread Muffins this weekend or something.

There were a couple of pies as well, but they went untouched. All three of us went for my Cookies instead.

That reminds me, I gotta get in on your cookie deal.

That stuffing sounds tasty! And so does cornbread. I am going to try making a tiny bit of cornbread with the corn I got from my garden. It'll be a weird color, since the corn was RAINBOW corn, but it was so much fun to grow.

Actually, looking at it now, that doesn't read quite like I meant it to. Only the Pecans were supposed to be attached to "stuffing", the rest of it was separate dishes. It was still all delicious, though.

I like the idea of Rainbow Cornbread, actually. I might have to try that sometime.

Incidentally, my b/f and I had actually gotten frozen turkey for Canadian Thanksgiving months ago that he'd never gotten around to cooking, and it happened to be the last cookable thing in the freezer earlier today. So since it's not Thanksgiving up here, and we're not big on holiday tropes anyway, he said "This isn't a Thanksgiving turkey. This is my everyday turkey." I got creamed corn and mashed potatoes out of it, to go with my Chinese tofu leftovers.

Hee! Y'know, I'd be all for everyday turkey--leftover turkey is one of the best snacks there is.

I would love to have the kind of meal we did on a regular basis. Meat, mushrooms, bread, root vegetables. I'd be all over that any day.

We went to the local Jewish deli and had "thanksgiving dinner everyday" and corned beef rubens. Mmm, corned beef.

Dude, it's been way too long since I had good Corned Beef. I need to fix that.

But I need other people involved, or else I will eat an entire Brisket myself, and that won't end well.

I had some kind of bizarre egg-salad/grilled cheese hybrid sandwich with some leftover tomato soup.

It's possible I should go grocery shopping at some point...

You guys really eat a lot at Thanksgiving, don't you? O_o

We had onion soup and a salad made up of ordinary lettuce, tomato, cucumber, grilled & preserved ah, peppers? Paprika? Anyway, and sun-dried tomato and olives, with a dressing of olive oil and balsamic vinegar. It was very easy, very tasty. :)

Of course! That's the whole point!

That sounds tasty, too! We're big on the balsamic and olive oil around here, too. But it's officially designated Summer Food, for some reason.

We had turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, steamed green beans, butternut squash, bread, homemade cranberry jelly, and sweet potatoes. Various beverages included wine, milk, water, and some foreign soda I didn't recognize but was yummy. Then (much) later dessert was cherry, apple, pumpkin and pecan pie with vanilla or coffee ice cream and fruit salad. Everyone was stuffed.

My only regret was no green bean casserole because the relatives don't like it, but we got the stuff to make it for us separately. I just had seconds after mom and I spent an hour deciding we don't have to brave the Black Friday insanity to get me a computer - I will wait for Cyber Monday and order online like a normal person.

My mom has fallen into the trap of being an EXCELLENT cook, which means we far prefer her cooking to storebought/restaurant food, and clamor for more. But we try to help out, and Dad does the turkey, so half the fun turns out to be putting the meal together.

The yam concoction sounds quite tasty. Also, I am suddenly dying to add parmesan grilled veggies to the Thanksgiving menu ...

I had a turkey which came out beautifully moist despite my constant worries that it would dry out, two kinds of mashed potatoes (regular potatoes and sweet potatoes) cranberry sauce that had congealed a bit but tasted just fine, some very good carrots and broccoli in honey-mustard sauce, and pumpkin pie that was NOT PUMPKIN OMG but butternut squash, due to my having left buying a pumpkin too late. Fortunately the Internet assured me that butternut squash was a good substitute and I honestly couldn't have told you the difference once it was all baked.

I hope you guys had a good one. I miss you terribly.

I love food.

FEASTING!!
- Turkey (16lbs), with a cajun dry-rub and a cajun-jalapeno butter injection (roasted while stuffed with celery, carrots, onions, green pepper and jalapenos)
- Giblet Gravy
- Green Bean Casserole, made with cream of onion instead of cream of mushroom, added green pepper, caramelized onions, bacon and cheddar cheese
- Some sort of dressing, pretty sure it was cornbread? (All I did was chop onions and celery for it. I don't like dressing. So this was Jim's project.)
- Mashed Potatoes, soaked the potatoes overnight, then boiled, then added an entire small carton of heavy whipping cream, a stick of butter, bacon and caramelized onions
- Deviled Eggs, cajun-spiced, with cheese in them
- Black Olives, Dill Pickles
- Brown-N-Serve Rolls (these are a weakness of mine), also leftover egg filling because Jim likes putting it in the rolls
- Wine (and Cream Soda, not pictured)
- Also not pictured: Pecan Pie, Apple Pie, and two Pumpkin Cheesecakes.
- Oh, and on the living room table as "appetizers" was a peanut trio and thin ribbon candy

We like to cook in our house. We like to cook, a lot. This was, um, all originally for just me and Jim ^____^;; (Luckily, Jim's sister Tiffy's plans fell through and joined us... saving us from ourselves.)

Midday while-playing-a-board-game meal:

Martinelli's sparkling apple juice
Assorted crackers with Mt. Tam cheese from Cowgirl Creamery
Homemade roasted almonds
Graber olives
A dry sausage with an Italian name I can't recall, but it tasted kind of like pepperoni with a hint of beef jerky

Thanksgiving dinner:

Roast turkey with bread stuffing and gravy
Cranberry sauce
Candied yams
Brussels sprouts & red bell peppers
Creamed onions (I always skip this dish)

Dessert:

Pumpkin pie
Pecan pie
Black currant tea with cream & sugar

Turkey, yin-yang-yams (er, mom can never remember if she likes sweet potatoes or yams, so she makes both and molds them into a yin yang in the bowl), mashededed taters, lotsssa wine, croissants, four kinds of cranberry sauce, stuffing, and gravy-with-an-extra-stock-pot-of gravy.

Oh, and I think there may have been a salad, but I thought green stuff was just for garnish.
