Loss of access to mapping search engines caused me to get lost in the woods on Day 7. Have just stumbled back out, with vague memories of subsisting on crude, unprocessed foods. Did you know nuts don't start out shelled, roasted, and salted? No word on whether M&Ms are naturally candy-coated, as I couldn't do an image search for M&M bushes and therefore have no idea how to recognize one.

No responses to my shouted opinions have been taped to my door or thrown through my window wrapped around a brick yet. Checked for smoke signals, but Idaho caught fire yesterday and the potato fallout is limiting visibility. Smells delicious, though.

Had a bunch of opinions about NPR's list of Top 100 Sci Fi/Fantasy books, but nowhere to publicly capslock them at people. Wound up just shouting them off the back porch toward the city and hoping my voice carries.

Can't remember how many days I've been without Lappy! Have no way to check the date! WHAT CENTURY IS IT?!

Index finger aches from banging on Nook screen. I miss homerow.

Decided to watch The Incredibles on DVD before remembering I don't have a computer anymore. Managed to improvise with the TV, which not only hooks up to video game consoles, but also plays DVDs. And you don't even need headphones since the speakers are pretty good! What will they think of next?

Could not remember the name of that one actor from that one movie. Could not access IMDB for complete filmography and bio. They found me crying in the closet, panicked at lack of instant information retrieval.

Ctrl+Z strangely useless on notebook paper. Perhaps it's like a Mac and I need to draw a clover?

Tried to relax and read Cracked on my Nook. Could not sustain multiple tabs. Resorted to writing down article titles and URLs to be manually searched out later.

Broke

Dude, I just found out my computer is magical.

Last night it turned from a laptop to a desktop before my very eyes!

Of course, this is the kind of trick it can only do once--not because we might figure it out upon multiple viewings, but more due to the way a screen lamp can only burn out once before it's, y'know, burned out. And, unfortunately, the trick is not reversible.

So my computer is broke. Conventional wisdom suggests the best course of action when you laptop screen breaks is to buy a new laptop. I've never liked the idea of disposable electronics--if I buy something, I want to get real use out of it, which may explain why my iPods and cell phones and whatnot stay around until they literally fall apart. Now, yes, things develop fast, and I won't eschew a new thing if I think it's a REAL improvement over its predecessor, but you gotta impress me. I won't buy something just because it's the latest. It has to be really useful. Like how the Nook I'm typing this on is really portable and saved me from having to buy another bookshelf.

Plus, I like this Lappy.

So my options are to grab a spare monitor (we have those here in Casa de Nerd) and make Lappy a Compy, or replace the screen if the manufacturer is willing. Both options mean limited intersocks for a bit, because typing on an e-reader is annoying as all hell, dammit. Get me a keyboard any day.
