Geeky Chef
Jan. 24th, 2014 02:20 amTried to make some of Grandma's Fairy Soup* tonight. Not bad stuff, but I have got to learn how to cook squash longer. (It didn't help that Mom was hungry and kept demanding to know if it was soup yet every few minutes.) It always comes out a little too crunchy, which isn't how you want your squash.
---
Also, it occurs to me that now that Mom's got a soda charger, I can try to bust out some pretty excellent Chateau Romani. I still think that fermentation is more fun than using the soda charger, but fermenting is a bad idea whe milk is involved, so in this case we'll just roll with it.

Speaking of geeky chefs,
acrossthelake came by tonight to politely try some of my soup, and then we traded TV shows! I'm evangelizing Fringe to her--aw, man, watching the first season is a lot like hanging out with my old buddies--and she showed me the pilot of American Horror Story, which appears to be a show rooted firmly in the Unlikable People Making Bad Decisions genre.** I may have to keep going on it just to see what the hell kind of genre it's actually going for. But hey, no matter what it's good to be watching Fringe again. And even better to be hanging out with my friend again!
*So-called by myself and my siblings because in the Wind Waker game your Grandma makes the soup for you after you give her a fairy. I'm sure they didn't mean that she made the soup out of the fairy, but well ...
**Also it seems that its opening title music is played largely by those springy things on the bottom corners of doors that are supposed to keep the door from banging into the wall. An interesting choice.

Oct. 9th, 2013 11:49 amFinally got around to getting Fringe's last season on DVD.* You know what that means--Mom and I are going on a Fringe binge!
Speaking of crazy Fringe stuff, I kind of want to see the other types of reactions from the unsuspecting coffee shop customers who got Carrie'd. I expect quite a few were like "YIKES--waitaminute this is a stunt, right?"
Also, I wish somebody'd had the presence of mind to play along--"Oh, it's just another psych. Don't worry, folks. I got this." (Or, as
nobleplatypus put it, "Dammit, this was supposed to be my day off." *pulls out futuristic weapon with a resigned sigh*) This is why I always carry a magic wand and an Ocarina of Time around. I'd better add a cartoonish space ray gun to my inventory, too.
*Yes, I know it's been on Netflix for a while, but dangit I have all the other seasons on DVD; might as well round it out. Plus, if we didn't have Finishing Off The Disc, Mom and I would never know when to stop watching for the evening.

Somewhere In Time And Space
Nov. 10th, 2012 07:27 pmSeason 4 Fringe Binge accomplished! We had to plow through it quickly on account of my sister is taking off to California tomorrow to live with my brother and find a job in a place that is not Utah. So we had to finish quickly.
I have yet to see anything from Season 5, though I've managed to osmosify a rough sense of what has happened so far. Still, having just come off the Season 4 finale, here's what I have to say:
( Casual Spoilers! )
-And spoiler free: I know this isn't where the show is going, but I just want to put it out there that I would TOTALLY watch a version of the show in which September just abandoned all pretense and joined the Fringe team. It's a proven TV fact: when pale bald omniscient Observers team up with mad scientists, the winner is us, the viewing public.
Seriously, guys, you've already established alternate timelines. SPINOFF. MAKE IT HAPPEN.

Back To Our Show
Nov. 4th, 2012 11:17 pmMom picked up the fourth season of Fringe for me! The problem with waiting till a season comes out on DVD before starting it is that you can't help but stumble across other people's opinions, and so I'm always a little anxious when I start to watch for myself. Fortunately, I've been pleasantly surprised so far.
On the other hand, it may just be that I've missed these characters. People ask me why the hell I like this show when I thought the X-Files was boring and stupid. The answer is characters. These characters are great.
The other answer is that they actually manage to fix or stop at least SOME of the monsters. Did they ever do that on the X-Files? NO. When JJ Abrams manages to get more closure per episode than your own show, you know you've got problems.
