The beets and carrots were looking ready to be harvested, to I pulled 'em out and had some local friends over for Deeper'n'Ever Pie.

And what you should take away from that statement is that I have local friends again!

Sorry, internet. I love you, but you don't bring me peanut-butter-chocolate-oatmeal freezer cookies, so it really does pay to know someone nearby.

Hooray for local friends! I look forward to meeting them. Also hooray for Deeper'n'Ever pie.

Local friends are definitely good to have. I'm hoping to actually get to spend time with my local friends again soon!

In Brian Jacques's Redwall books, the moles' favorite dish is something called Turnip'n'Tater'n'Beetroot Deeper'n'Ever Pie, and it always just sounded FANTASTIC. (ALL the food sounded fantastic in the books, but there was something special about the pie.) Back in the day my family decided we had to have it, so we worked out a recipe. I've since combined it with a mushroom pasty recipe from a medieval cookbook, and indeed it is good. A while later an official Redwall cookbook came out with a rather different recipe, but I still prefer my version. A few other people discuss their variations here, and you can also see what the pie looks like!

That looks lovely! And right up my alley -- with a Eastern European and Gaelic heritage, potatoes and pastry and starchy root vegetables all go together.
I've never read those books, but I think I may need to now. Hope it's not too late for me. :)
