bloodyrosemccoy: (YOU ARE ALL WEIRDOS)

In other news, I was cruisin’ the intersocks today and discovered that KEL/JOREN SHIPPING EXISTS OH GOD WHY.

I suppose I should have known. To be honest, though, even after years listening to teenage girls sigh over Draco Malfoy, Edward Cullen, Raistlin Majere,* etc., it never would have occurred to me. Possibly this is because I require a nano-scintilla of subtext for a hero/douchebag pairing, and there is none here. As far as I can tell, Joren’s main qualification for fancrushery is that he looks like a manga prettyboy. THIS IS NOT ENOUGH.

Fortunately, then I found some great art of Numair, Daine, Kel, and even Kylaia al Jmaa**, as well as the funniest Lioness Rampant cover ever,*** and everything was okay again.

*Yes, unlike the other two there I love Raistlin as a character, but he is not exactly a Romantical Lead.

**Speaking of fancrushes.

***"She's conquered evil--but can she conquer her deepest desires?" OH MAN PRICELESS.

I...wait, what?

Joren, as in the guy who sees no contradiction between "as a knight, everyone can look to you for protection" and "hey, let's kidnap a maidservant" - that Joren?

Well....rule 34, I guess.

(Man, Kylaia al Jmaa is so badass. As is Eda Bell.)

HE IS JUST MISUNDERSTOOD.

Eda Bell is awesome, but Kylaia's backstory just makes me want to squee like a little twerpy fangirl.

I am pretty sure that cover has featured in a panel called "Bad covers for good books." Along with the Alanna on Mars cover that graced an early edition of "The Woman Who Rides Like a Man". (I believe the image I'm thinking of is attached to this particular amazon.com listing? Yeah.)

From here it looks like those two covers are from the same set of Knopf paperbacks ... and judging by the blurbs across the tops of all four books, Knopf had a copy editor with a knack for getting things totally right and totally wrong at the same time. I cannot stop laughing at the entire set.

I feel that my own sets of Immortals, Protector of the Small, and Trickster, sets where every single book features Serious Monochrome Photo Of Girl With Blanket by Joyce Tenneson, are pretty bad covers for good books, too. I much prefer illustrations that actually say something about the character, story, etc..

I've seen the picture on that Lioness Rampant cover somewhere else as well. An old Dragon Magazine, I think.

I pretty much just assume that all ships that wouldn't break too many laws of physics are out there somewhere, file it under "people are stupid" (with a Rule 34 cross-reference), and go about my business

I can't even articulate how many ways that cover entertains me. That eyeliner! That hair! That jewel! That headband! Those earrings! OH GOD, ALANNA IN AN 80'S HAIR BAND.

It took me a second to figure out who you were talking about, and then I was just "OMG, ewww!" What is wrong with people? I've read some "bad guy reformed for the love of heroine" fics, and not all of them were terrible, but Joren DIED rather than admit there was anything wrong with anything he said or did. And even if you do an AU where he did reform, Kel isn't the type to forgive him. No. Just... no. Ugh. *shivers* Now I have to try to think of something pleasant so I can sleep.
