It was a TERRIBLE cartoon. Bad art, bad writing, just plain bad. But it did have that entertainingly transparent Megatron/Starscream dynamic--I swear all their conversations were like the one I printed above, except for the ones that were "Megatron has a paper cut! IT IS MY CHANCE TO SEIZE POWER!" "No, it's not, Starscream, sit the hell down." Megatron WAS an incompetent loser, but I'll give him one thing: with Starscream, he had the patience of a SAINT.

The best episode is the Fantastic Voyage ripoff. Not because of the ripoff itself, but because of the scene where the Decepticons all get totally smashed and start reminiscing about their home planet. "Good ol' Shybertron! Those were the daysh! Din't hafta wear these shtoopid dishguises ..." Then Laserbeak augurs into the ground and they all pass out.

A quick check of Netflix says I cannot easily get those old terrible episodes. Which is a crying shame, because that sounds exactly like the sort of thing I'd love to put on in the background on weekend evenings when I'm having a beer and doing other things on the computer.

(Currently filling that slot: The Mysterious Cities of Gold! Terrible voice-acting, worse music, and the most hilarious exposition ever. The only reason the phrase "As you know, Bob" has not been uttered is because no one is named Bob. YET.)

I will have to check into this Mysterious Cities of Gold as my next Thing To Ignore! What is it?

It's streaming on Netflix! And, as far as I can tell, not actually available anywhere else. (Officially, anyway.) It's an anime from the late 1970s or something, dubbed into English--rather poorly, which makes me hope the original dialogue is better. Somehow. It takes place around the time of Cortez or a little after, and chronicles the travels of Esteban, a young boy with Mysterious Powers and an obligatory Significant Amulet, who goes to the New World to try to find his lost father. By episode two he's hanging out with a South American princess of some sort--I'm fuzzy on which nation she's supposed to be from--who has another Significant Amulet, and who defiantly proclaims she will never help the wicked men who kidnapped her find the lost cities of gold.

According to the credits, there will be some sort of condor-shaped steampunk plane at some point, so I am watching at least until then. And an Indian boy who looks to be comic relief, but...I'm hoping he'll be less goofy than the credits suggest? He hasn't appeared in the show in the first three or four episodes I've seen.

Oh, and at the end of each episode they have a little set of video clips in which, with stock photography and re-enactments, they earnestly explain some aspect of anthropology/history/culture from South America in that time period. Circa late 1970s and aimed at grade school kids. It's...interesting.

Catchy theme song, though.
