I AM SURE ALL MY GEEK BUDDIES ARE WAITING BREATHLESSLY FOR IMPRESSIONS OF THE NEW STAR TREK FILM. WELL, I HAVE BEEN TO THE MIDNIGHT SHOWING, MY FRIENDS, AND I CAN ASSURE YOU THAT THIS MOVIE IS VERY, VERY LOUD.

I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO HEREBY INAUGURATE BABY SPOCK* INTO MY COLLECTION OF PEOPLE FOR WHOM I HAVE DECLARED UNDYING LOVE.

AND WITH THE SPECTACULAR SCENE INVOLVING KIRK, SULU, AND SOME GUY IN A RED SPACESUIT, I AM FORCED TO CONCLUDE THAT THIS FRANCHISE HAS VERY WEIRD IDEAS OF FANSERVICE.

IN CONCLUSION: DUUUUDE.

*JUST TO BE CLEAR, BABY SPOCK IS THE ZACHARY QUINTO ONE. I HAVE DUBBED THE BRIEFLY-APPEARING CHILD VERSION THE SPOCKLET.

My b/f and I waited in line for hours to see it just last night. It was the first movie we saw together in a theatre ever. It had its flaws (Earth bars wouldn't have had Cardassian drinks in that time period :P) but I certainly don't regret having seen it. Did you read the 4-part comic prequel?

I did not!

I'd say that's a pretty good first right there for you two!

I admit my biggest issue was less about the details and more that it was more like Star Wars than Star Trek in feel--actiony, epic, but less of that sense of anthropology and diplomacy and discovery. But hey, still pretty awesome. (And how badass is it that they made Uhura a xenolinguist?)
