I AM SURE ALL MY GEEK BUDDIES ARE WAITING BREATHLESSLY FOR IMPRESSIONS OF THE NEW STAR TREK FILM. WELL, I HAVE BEEN TO THE MIDNIGHT SHOWING, MY FRIENDS, AND I CAN ASSURE YOU THAT THIS MOVIE IS VERY, VERY LOUD.
I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO HEREBY INAUGURATE BABY SPOCK* INTO MY COLLECTION OF PEOPLE FOR WHOM I HAVE DECLARED UNDYING LOVE.
AND WITH THE SPECTACULAR SCENE INVOLVING KIRK, SULU, AND SOME GUY IN A RED SPACESUIT, I AM FORCED TO CONCLUDE THAT THIS FRANCHISE HAS VERY WEIRD IDEAS OF FANSERVICE.
IN CONCLUSION: DUUUUDE.
*JUST TO BE CLEAR, BABY SPOCK IS THE ZACHARY QUINTO ONE. I HAVE DUBBED THE BRIEFLY-APPEARING CHILD VERSION THE SPOCKLET.

Date: 2009-05-08 09:22 am (UTC)I admit, I cheered and applauded at Ensign Ricky Redshirt's fiery demise. The catchphrases made me nod and go "Uh huh," but a rousing and inspiring salute to the fine tradition of the original show was enough to get me going.

Date: 2009-05-08 09:26 am (UTC)If you don't explode, decapitate or completely incinerate at least one redshirt, it is NOT a Star Trek anything. Clearly, they have learnt this.
The only catchphrase that didn't make me groan as well as giggle (I admit, I giggled at all of them as well as groaning) was 'I'm a doctor, not a physicist!' But I think that's because I was struck quite forcibly by what a FABULOUS casting choice Karl Urban was for Bones.
I spent MOST of the movie debating with myself over whether or not the guy playing Kirk was the guy who played Iceman in the X-men films. Turns out he isn't. But it was very distracting!

Date: 2009-05-08 06:31 pm (UTC)They did a pretty good job casting, I gotta say. I liked it when the actors would try to insert some familiar mannerism from the old show, like how Kirk lounges in the captain's chair or Spock's eyebrow-pop, because it never QUITE worked but it was a pretty good try.

I admit my biggest issue was less about the details and more that it was more like Star Wars than Star Trek in feel--actiony, epic, but less of that sense of anthropology and diplomacy and discovery. But hey, still pretty awesome. (And how badass is it that they made Uhura a xenolinguist?)

YOU MAY ENJOY YOUR BABY SPOCK, MY DEAR, FOR IT LEAVES MORE KIRK FOR ME.
