Fifteen-Minute Mood Swing

… And the pendulum swings back to the volcano-from-a-molehill: I am on the verge of tears.
I really, really wanted a Kindle 2 for my birthday.
God dammit, this fucking BETTER be a "glitch." I’m retreating into my happy giant post of links to sulk and pout. Right after I fire off a certain letter.
ETA: All right, so. As of tonight, I am willing to forgive Amazon for the most part. I suspect this "glitch" may have taken the form of "a few dumbfucks in the company with what we will generously call ideals" (in which case there may be some firings), or it might be a little more innocent, or perhaps they are that reprehensible but Awesome Power Of The Internet Compels Them. I don't know. But I do feel I must point something out: they say they're FIXING it.
Given my experience that businesses who get called on unacceptable policies tend to flip off the callers and say "We didn't want you here anyway," admitting that it's probably a bad idea and fixing it is a vast improvement.
And I still hold with the theory of positive reinforcement. If they stick to their word, they get another letter--telling them that reversing the policy was a GOOD CHOICE.
And, no matter what caused it in the first place, perhaps they will keep a closer eye on themselves now that they know that the internet is watching you, Amazon ... ALWAYS WATCHING.
I also hear Barnes & Noble is looking into making Kindle rivals. Something to think about, Amazon.

Date: 2009-04-13 04:09 am (UTC)I feel icky and guilty for having a Kindle. If this issue doesn't get fixed I'm going to have to return it.

Date: 2009-04-13 04:35 am (UTC)It's coming to light that it may have been a "glitch" now (here's his follow-up), but there will be further bulletins as events warrant.

Date: 2009-04-13 06:43 am (UTC)HOWEVER, I give 'em props for one thing: at least they aren't bullheadedly trying to say that they're still right and it's a swell policy and they stand behind it and it is we the consumers who are overreacting. It's not exactly an apology, but it is an admission that no matter what the cause it would be ridiculous to censor the stuff that got censored.
And who knows? Maybe some programming idiot entered in the wrong parameters or something, and the internet knew about it before they could properly fire the jerk. I'm skeptical, but then I know what it's like to be unfairly accused of malicious intent on a much smaller scale, so I'm not going to completely scoff at the excuse.

Date: 2009-04-13 07:00 pm (UTC)Right now I'm not sure who pisses me off more; Amazon or the Stupid People on the Internet who are supporting the whole thing. >_

Date: 2009-04-13 07:08 pm (UTC)I can't believe the "glitch" theory, but I don't see Amazon being this particular variety of assholes, either.
coming late to this news!
Date: 2009-04-24 09:52 pm (UTC)I believe the "glitch" has been fixed now, but do you have any updated info on it? Have they issued an apology, for example?
