I don't understand how even one person, much less fifty people, could step on another human being. That poor man and his poor family.

Well, at that point they were stepping on him my guess is it's because there was a crush of people behind them and they had no way of stopping it. But the fact that such a crowd was whipped/whipped themselves into a frenzy where they were crushing forward like that. The mobbing is what caused it, and that's what's disgusting.
