Word. Nothing is sadder than having my disgust for this day of rampant soulless consumerism validated by something like this.

I honestly don't think EVERY part of the US is that fucked up...but yeah, a lot of it is.

Heinous

I was shocked when I heard about that earlier today. I don't think it's actually sunk in for me yet, though. I feel kinda bad, but... I'm torn between screaming at everyone for being retarded, and laughing my ass off because this sort of thing is just expected from Wal*Mart, the most evil international retail shop in the world.

It is sad and pretty pointless for that man to die because of how greedy people are. And for what? I don't really understand what makes Wal*Mart so great... but then, I never shop there.

...And people wonder why I am often a gloomy and cynical man.

I only heard about the existence of Black Friday a few days ago, I didn't realise it was some sort of institution of American life. Surely there are big sales after every holiday, in which no-one goes crazy?

For goodness sake, though, trampled to death? I thought that was a sad and ridiculous thing to happen at a 90s boyband concert, never mind a fucking supermarket sale.

Yeah, every year they have some footage of frenzied shoppers stampeding Wal*Mart, beating each other up over Tickle Me Elmo, etc. It's awful.

Glad to know SOME places are sane.

I can't even believe that happened. I hope those shoppers are enjoying their fucking half-price Cuisinarts.

hear about the two people that shot up a Toys R Us?

*sigh* I hate shopping anyway, why would I want to go out at 6am and do it with 60K other people poking and elbowing me? Thank you, I'll be buying most of my presents at Amazon again.

From what I hear, that was a gang situation that happened to break loose in a toy store. Still, who the hell brings a gun to a toy store?

My hubby works at a bookstore and was working on Black Friday. When he called during his lunchbreak, I told him to be grateful for no one in the store being trampled to death.

Giftmas season is pretty crucial for retailers, especially small local chains like the one my hubby works for. But they're sane, only open an hour earlier on Black Friday and hope for a steady amount of gift buying over the month between Thanksgiving and Christmas, rather than an orgy of insanity on one day.

I'm with you on that--gift season is crucial. But that single-day savings with a literal frenzy is pretty awful.

I don't understand how even one person, much less fifty people, could step on another human being. That poor man and his poor family.

Well, at that point they were stepping on him my guess is it's because there was a crush of people behind them and they had no way of stopping it. But the fact that such a crowd was whipped/whipped themselves into a frenzy where they were crushing forward like that. The mobbing is what caused it, and that's what's disgusting.

Ditto.

People go freakin' nuts with consumeristic glee. It's so STUPID.

Remember, agoraphobia and claustrophobia are only irrational fears, it doesn't make sense to be afraid of crowds because there's nothing dangerous about them, crowds are rational, reasonable, considerate entities that can be trusted not to break down any important boundaries when push comes to shove, competition is healthy, capitalism is the best system, I'm sorry, did I leave anything out?
