I’m sure you’ve all heard by now about the latest steaming pile of shit * W is proposing: that The Pill—that’s right the birth control pill—should be defined as an abortion pill. Which means they would subject it to all the nonsense they subject other abortion procedures to.

 

WOW! This is incredible!  We’re going backwards through time!

 

So, naturally, a lot of you are pissed as all hell, because this shit is fucking ridiculous. You will probably want to tell the White House so. You can do that here. I post that link again, in case you missed it the first time: HERE is where you go to send a polite message to the White House demanding to know what color the sky is in their universe and whether it is a mixed-up place where dogs walk people and you wear your shoes on your hands and WOMEN ARE DENIED BASIC REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH RIGHTS BECAUSE OF SOME IDIOT BAD SCIENCE.

 

I already sent mine. Alas, I didn’t copy it, so I’d have to rewrite it, but here are the basic points, paraphrased a bit:

 

• Hi! Women are people! Sometimes they actually have some idea what’s best for them!
• Sometimes women like to have sex, but don’t want babies. Some people think this is bad, but not everyone does. Thinking that they will not have sex because you tell them not to is unrealistic.
• If we all used birth control, like condoms and The Pill, properly, it would seriously cut back on the number of actual abortions people would need because they wouldn’t be getting pregnant in the first place.
• Some women, like, for example, ME, use The Pill for other medical reasons like regulating our hormones and not sprouting giant mutant cysts on our ovaries that have to be removed while people from the TLC channel interview us about our Medical Mystery.
• Finally, and rather importantly, The Pill does not cause abortions.  The Pill’s main job is to keep you from ovulating.  There is a possibility that, in the rare case you do ovulate and get a fertilized zygote, the zygote may then croak. This is a hypothesis, and if you assholes are going to challenge evolution as “just a theory,” then by god you should not be basing other concepts on a hypothesis.  However, if you define The Pill as an abortion pill, then that would mean the loss or waste of a gamete is an abortion. Women lose a gamete every month naturally, and men—well, they lose millions.** The legislation is based on information that is, quite simply, WRONG.

I’m sure you all can think of many other reasons, and expand on mine. I suggest you tell them all about it!

Yeah, I read all about it just yesterday, and was once again glad I don't live anywhere near the United States. What's happening to America? Is it slowly transforming into a theocracy? How come freedom of religion takes precedence over basic human rights, like a woman's right to decide what's best for her body? It is absolutely ridiculous.

I thought religion was a private thing, yet whenever I see a US politician talking on the TV, the name of God inevitably crops up, sooner or later . If politicians in my country mentioned God in every little speech they make, they'd become an instant laughing-stock. It just isn't done. Separation of church and state, anyone?

Grey's would tell you that pregnancy occurs at implantation, but the bush administration says otherwise and that all women take the pill strictly for contraceptive purposes (killing helpless gametes and non implanted zygotes) and by golly gosh gee, they're always right.

Just a tip: online petitions mean exactly zilch. Congressional staffers delete them out of hand. Actually calling or writing (snail mail) your congressperson, however, will usually get their attention (unless it's a form letter).

sorry to hear that about online petitions, though I suspected as much. Any idea whether emails get noticed at all? I mean, I assume the office staff generally track the number of emails they get on a given issue, especially if they can count a "yes" or "no" vote just from the subject line... but I'm not sure. I really hope so, though, because I generally don't have the time for snail mail and I hate making phone calls.
