Amelia adds: Mom’n’Dad’s Anniversary. On this day 25 years ago, during lunch break, Mom’n’Dad went down to the county building or whatever to get married. Then he went back to work and she went grocery shopping. Way to go, guys!
The songs in Round Two seem to have varied between widely recognizable and desperately obscure. Some of the obscure ones are by not-obscure artists, like Ringo’s “Write One For Me” or James Taylor’s “Sun On The Moon,” but there are a few that I didn’t expect anyone to get.
Also, some of you may have notice that my music taste is about thirty years behind the times. Music was better back then, dammit. And colors were brighter. Etc.
1. I’ve been cheated, been mistreated, when will I be loved?
“When Will I Be Loved?” by Linda Rondstadt.
2. Pretty woman, walking down the street! Pretty woman, the kind I’d like to meet!
“Pretty Woman,” most famously done by Roy Orbison, although for some reason I have three other versions as well: Rockapella, Van Halen, and—I swear—a bagpipe version.
3. Oh komm doch, komm zu mir, du nimmst mir den Verstand ...*
“Komm’, Gib’ Mir Deine Hand”—or, more recognizably, “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” by the Beatles. Yes, they sang this in German. It’s really cute.
4. Well, beat the drum and hold the phone—the sun came out today!
“Centerfield” by John Fogerty. This is the most exuberant song in the world, and makes you want to go run around in circles outside.
5. Come save me from things I shouldn’t do! I need you; every word is true.*
“The Call of the Wild” by America. This one was hard, because it’s on one of their newer albums, but I just love it.
6. I love my friends, and they love me—we’re just as close as we can be!
“I Got It From Agnes” by Tom Lehrer. “I got it from Agnes! She got it from Jim! We all agree it must have been Louise who gave it to him!” No mention of what “it” could be, of course. It’s such a mystery.
7. Are you gonna take me home tonight? Oh, down beside that red firelight …
“Fat Bottomed Girls” by Queen.
8. Let me fly like an eagle free, run like a deer that’s how I want to be …*
“Mountain Man” by Tom Nolan.
9. Take my love, take my land, take me where I cannot stand …
“Ballad of Serenity,” written by Joss Whedon and performed by Sonny Rhodes. Yes, this is the theme song from Firefly.
10. Lord a’mighty, I feel my temperature rising … higher and higher, it’s burning through to my soul.
“Burnin’ Love” by Elvis. Actually, the version I have is by Wynonna Judd, but you weren’t to know that. This was also from the Lilo & Stitch soundtrack.
11. They showed up on my doorstep just a couple weeks ago. They looked so sweet and harmless; tell me, how was I to know?
“Attack of the Radioactive Hamsters from a Planet Near Mars” by Weird Al Yankovic. No, I don’t know what planet he’s talking about.
12. In line, in line, it’s all in a line! My ducks are all in a row.
“Sun on the Moon” by James Taylor. This song makes absolutely no sense. None. This is okay, though, because James Taylor has reached the point where he does not need to make sense to be fantastic.
13. There is a man who lives a life of danger…
“Secret Agent Man” by Johnny Rivers.
14. A young man strumming his guitar in the corner of the bar, singing ’bout a broken heart for hours and hours.
“Write One For Me,” by Ringo Starr, sung in a duet with Willie Nelson.
15. Baby, let me be your lovin’ teddy bear! Put a chain around my neck and lead me anywhere!
“(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear” by Elvis Presley. Also the theme song of a “reflexive fanfic” (what I call it when I fanfic my own characters by putting them in an AU) in my brain at the moment. Draw your own conclusions.
16. Inspector Mills, I’d like to tell you ’bout a girl I saw at a party just the other night in Beverly Hills.
“Inspector Mills” by America (told you I was a fan).
17. You’ve got a friend in me.
“You’ve Got a Friend in Me” (yes! That is the title, believe it or not) by Randy Newman. From Toy Story.
18. Here come old flat top he come, groovin’ up slowly …
“Come Together” by the Beatles.
19. Two in the morning, too hot to sleep, tossing and turning and twisting the sheets …
“Old Weakness” by Delbert McClinton
20. Why do you laugh at me when you know I really care? You sometimes act as though I’m not even there. *
“Submarine Ladies,” America
21. When I die and they lay me to rest, gonna go to the place that’s the best …
“Spirit in the Sky” by Norman Greenbaum. I don’t know why I love this song so damn much.
22. Way down, way way down, way way down deep …*
“Way Down Deep” (once again, surprise!) by Jennifer Warnes.
23. I see a bad moon rising! I see trouble on the way!
“Bad Moon Rising” by Creedence Clearwater Revival.
24. Nibblin’ on spongecake, watchin’ the sun bake all of those tourists covered with oil …
“Margaritaville” by Jimmy Buffett.
25. Picture yourself on a boat in a river with tangerine trees and marmalade skies …
“Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” by the Beatles.
26. Sometimes I wonder if I’m ever gonna make it home again. It’s so far and out of sight.
“Home Again” by Carole King.
27. When the sun beats down and burns the tar up on the roof …
“Under the Boardwalk.” Not sure who originally did this, but mine was by the Drifters.
28. I’m telling you people, tell you no lies. My heart is aching; I’ll tell you why …*
“Eyes of the World” by Fleetwood Mac. This song begins with a riff from Pachelbel’s Fucking Canon in D. However, it uses the Fucking Canon as it should be used: as a background harmony.
29. Para bailar la bamba … para bailar la bamba se necesita una poca de gracia!
“La Bamba,” made famous by Ritchie Valens. My version is by Los Lobos.
30. First she sees her hypnotist, then she rushes to her psychiatrist, sees her acupuncturist; she’s got to got to get fixed!*
“Floundering” by Carly Simon. I know a few people who could use this as a theme song.
The line “Behold my heavenly, silky locks!” is from James and the Giant Peach.
We’ll play again someday!

Date: 2007-08-05 10:00 pm (UTC)I can never figure out if Greenbaum is serious. But it doesn't matter. I just love bobbing my head and singing, "I got a friend in JEE-zuss!" Good times.
