bloodyrosemccoy: (Fairy Lights!)

3. When do you put up the tree?

When my brother gets home.  Probably about week before Christmas this year, then.  Putting it up is a big deal, with lots of Christmas music and light-fiddling and delicious snacks.

Our lights are those damn bubble light things from years ago.  On houses I prefer the little twinkly fairy lights (in color, of course—I can see why they’re called fairy lights!), but somehow on the tree the silly bubble lights look good. Most of our decorations have long traditions behind them—my brother’s Coke one goes next to a red light, I put on my engraved 1st Christmas one first, I always get to do those two fancy ones my mom got years ago because they’re my favorites.*

The biggest deal, though, is the selection process, which is long and arduous with Dad.  He must inspect every tree, and then reinspect them, while all of us stand around the tree he will eventually buy (we know which one it is) and say, “Let’s just get this one and go, dangit!”

*Remember those weird styrofoam globes with the hair they had you pin sequins to in preschool, back before pins became Total Preschool Taboo? They’re made from a couple of those, but they’re really pretty.  Go figure.

bloodyrosemccoy: (Christmas Tree)

Okay, dudes, I have decided to do an advent calendar this year, because advent calendars are fun!  And this year, I am going to do a meme calendar!  I found a Christmas meme on[info]queenlyzard’s blog with 25 questions, so I will answer one a day until Christmas.  I’ll mark the posts as advent posts so that people who get sick of Christmas can skip ’em. But hey—it gives me something to talk about

Since I missed December first, two questions today!

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags?

Oh, definitely wrapping paper. I love wrapping—I take pride in doing it well, and it’s kinda meditative.  And it makes one of our traditions a lot more fun—when Mom corrals all us kids to wrap each other’s presents at the same time, in the same room. We sit there with furniture blocking our view of each other’s stuff and comment on it as we wrap—“Damn, you are going to love this!”

Dad, however, did rock the gift bagging one year when he stuffed a large box in a white Hefty bag that stretched till we could see through it, then stuck a bow on top. To this day I have never seen a worse wrapping job.  He should get a medal.

2. Real tree or Artificial?

I like me a real tree, because it smells good and feels right.  But this year Mom bought the most amazing thing ever—a 3-foot tall, pink aluminum Christmas tree.*  I had no idea they actually made those.  I thought the Charlie Brown Christmas Special was exaggerating.

I do have one more tree, though—the dolls always set one up in my room, and it is indeed artificial.  I was going to dig it out today, but I think it’ll be tomorrow instead.
