Liz thinks that the next Las Vegas spectacular should be CSI: On Ice.  They really should make it, because it would be a melding of everything people like about Las Vegas, and I can guarantee that Detective Jim Brass doing a Biellmann spin would make at least as much sense as Cirque du Soleil's 'O.’

It was cool, although it’s possible that some of it was a hallucination due to lack of sleep.  The acrobats were fun to watch and the colors and music were nice, but I’ll be damned if I knew what it was about.  There was some sort of plot, but that was only recognizable by these two guys who kept dashing around with some sort of Significant Red Scarf.  The Conductor Dude would chase the Hapless Loser guy about for a bit, and then you’d see acrobatics, and then the music would get somber and sad and slow, and finally somebody would get hold of an accordion and they’d celebrate with wild flips.  Then they’d start over.

I leaned over to Aunt, who back in the day was a helluva ballerina and thus, I reasoned, was used to interpreting this sort of thing.  “So, do you know what this is about?”

Onstage, the troupe suddenly burst into what appeared to be a fine rendition of Klingon opera.

“You got me,” she said.

We decided to stick with watching the acrobatics.

I can see why Emily and Caitrin were inspired, though. The acrobats were fun to see flying about with such ease; beautiful and amazing. And I have to admit, I realized as I watched that a troupe of acrobats could fill in a small gap in one of my own stories. Damn that insidious Cirque.

Interestingly, I wasn’t nervous about the health of the players, even the ones sailing high above the stage.  I didn’t join in the stunned gasps of the audience at difficult feats, and I think the reason is that the stage below was not unforgivingly solid, it was a great big tank of water.  So I liked the hypnotic daredevil feats without worrying.

But aside from the daring young mans on the flying trapezes, I was impressed by other bits. One of the most mesmerizing parts was an interlude with two dancing American clowns.  The Conductor man had a cool way of running where he would bound up and almost hover for a few feet, like a speeded-up Silly Walk.  And I was oddly amazed at a simple bit where a guy in the background used his foot to flip his hat onto his head—an incidental moment that stuck as well as any of the leaps or dives.

It was fascinating, colorful and fun, and I’m glad I got to check out the Cirque. Even if I didn’t get the plot, which is a bit superfluous in a circus anyway.

On second thought, maybe THAT should be the next Las Vegas spectacular.

Yesterday, I learnt that a literature professor at my university, who specializes in drama, is fascinated by Cirque du Soleil in Las Vegas and wants to make that his new topic of research. I think he just wants a paid trip to Las Vegas.

I've been watching the Cirque shows since I was a child, since I live here in Quebec, and yes, they've influenced my writing a lot too during the past few years (one of my upcoming characters is a bat who's had his wings surgically removed to keep the risk factor and public interest up...). I make up a different plot for their shows every time I see them, even when I see the same one several times, because I figure that's what they're for, although I do fast-forward through some of the "comedy" parts when I watch them on tape or DVD after having seen them live.

I also think Boko would be a good candidate for the Cirque, if one could ever convince him to quit robbing museums. I caught myself wishing I could see him move around, because I think he'd mesmerize me.

That reply was a shot of endorphins in the arm on a morning on which I really needed one. Thank you.
