Here's hoping he's ok, and can let you know soon.

Maybe this'll convince the Indonesian government to extend their warning system to Java a little faster.

But probably not.

The report is a little confusing.
It says in one spot that the water receded about 1500 feet, about a half hour before the wave hit.
It says the wave was 6 foot tall.
Elsewhere, it says that waves as tall as cocoanut palms pounded the shore before the tsunami hit.

You would think that last would have pretty much demolished everything before the tsunami, but perhaps those didn't have the mass behind them that the tsunami did.
However, you would think that people seeing the ocean recede 1500 feet would have a clue. Especially people living there.

In any event, yes, a warning system needs to be in place.

Darn thing keeps changing as they get new information. Ah, the internet. But here's the clarifier: She said a series of large waves as tall as coconut trees came and then the water began to recede. (Bolding mine.)

Also, two words: short trees. ;)

Oh, sorry, I forgot to add that I think they didn't move as far inland. The wave came quite a ways inland; probably the smaller ones just hit the beach.

When I was watching the news they said that in one area a couple kids who were playing with bonoculars on the beach saw the waves. They yelled "Tsunami!" and ran like hell, but the other people on the beach didn't believe them. Also apparently that part of Java was one of the places that wasn't hit by the 2004 one.
2004- Tsunami
2005- Earthquake
2006- Volcanic Eruption
2006- Earthquake
2006- Tsunami

Yeesh. I'm not sure I'd want to live there.
