The one thing I took away from that Miss Utah business was that it's ludicrous to expect ANYONE to be able to provide a satisfactory answer to a multifaceted, yet bizarrely vague, question addressing a large social issue in the 12-second time frame allotted. I would have stood there aghast and finally said something like "How the hell am I supposed to answer THAT? World peace. Fuck you all" and stomped offstage.
One of the several reasons I am not Miss Utah, I guess.

Date: 2013-06-23 04:39 am (UTC)I don't really have strong feelings about these types of contests - but I have seen that clip and while she didn't exactly come off as *prepared* - I'm not sure what anyone could have come up with as a good answer in a quick snippet

Date: 2013-06-23 04:49 am (UTC)The question was ridiculous, though. I realize they're making a token effort to show that the pageant is about Serious Feminist Issues, not just about how white your teeth are and what you look like in a bathing suit. It's backfiring.
Although I will point out that the OTHER Miss Utah, from the Miss America competition LOOK I DON'T EVEN KNOW, has been spending her term encouraging women and girls to get involved in Science and will be continuing medical school once her term is up. Which is nice, I guess. (I only know all this because she was the opening speaker for Phil Plait when he gave his talk here. It was a bit of cognitive dissonance for everybody.)
