Today might mark the first time I have ever regretted the disadvantages of owning a basic no-frills cell phone telephone whose only extra feature is that it tells the time. Do you have any idea how hard it is to try on glasses frames when you can't actually see yourself through them? If I had a smartass phone, I could take pictures of myself in each pair and examine those, rather than have to stick my face an inch away from the mirrors in the Glasses Place.

So I finally just went with glasses almost the same as the ones I already have, except for the important difference that I can read road signs through the new ones, and I don't spend all day squinting so hard the skin on the back of my scalp gets stretch marks.

Also, I got me some prescription sunglasses. Dang, y'all, I don't know how I got along without these. No longer do I have to put a pair of big dumb shades over my regular glasses. I am all set now!

Damn it's good to live in a time when glasses exist. Every so often I wonder how I'd have gotten along back in the olden times. Even if my eyes didn't get this bad, I would probably spend my life with one hell of a headache.

I try to have someone I know with me when trying on frames since I can't see myself properly. Which I've been doing since way before anybody had smartassphones! Although I don't have one, either. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who doesn't, though!

You're not alone! I am not against smartassphones; I just don't need one.

Oh, the joys of glasses shopping. Last time I went, I brought my mother-in-law and a camera, so she could give advice and take pictures that weren't horrible out-of-focus and too-up-close. I checked the photos both in the shops and later back home, to decide on which pair to get.

But no need to do something different every time. If you like what you've got getting something similar works just as well! So congrats on the new specs, and shades.

(I have never been able to keep a pair of sunglasses beyond a few days at worst or for the length of an average holiday at best, so I'm hesitant about ever getting prescription ones. Seriously, most of them end up in a suitably exotic ocean somewhere.)

Since I've had glasses since childhood, I have never quite understood sunglasses. I had clip-on ones, but there's no point in handing a twelve-year-old with neither pockets nor purse a tiny flimsy thing of metal. I just never carried them. I could do it now, and I know why I would have to now (Mount Rainier in July. We have pictures. My pupils are *gone*.) but I have never picked up the habit.

I got pretty dependent on my clip-on pair in Kenya, because it was that or let my eyeballs sizzle in their sockets. But clip-ons don't work on these frames, so I've been wearing giant crazy ones over my regular glasses, because it's rather NICE to keep the glare reduced.

Yeah, I've just stuck with the same style of frames for like 10 years now, for much that reason.

Plus, they look good! And it saves the problem of panicking when faced with all those CHOICES.

Oh, and I still just go for ludicrously large aviators for my sunglasses option. I broke my really good pair last fall, but found some more that are OK.
