Not all my birthday gifts were pants and underwear, though! I got pajamas, too My brother flew in to bestow this upon me:

That right there is a freaking map of the Mushroom Kingdom, my friends. A "Super Mario World," if you will. And it's done in loving detail:

Photobucket

The frame is surrounded by artistic renditions of sprites from various games. I always liked Dino Torch.

How awesome is that? (Answer: So awesome it's getting framed and going on my wall, right across from a breathtakingly painted pair of jeans my friend gave me in high school about six pant sizes ago.)

Photobucket

My sister got the map of Hyrule for her birthday. And let me just say, I think it's pretty cool that Nintendo Power has a section for fanmade works of art now.*

This would make a hell of a tattoo.

So yeah, it wasn't all Boring Useful Things for the birthday. Even the pajamas from my sister had Buford Van Stomm's shirt design! Not totally grown up yet.

Seriously, though, this new underwear is GREAT. What a terrific thing to get.

*Also, rather hilarious how many crafting nerds realized that pixellation lends itself well to things like beading and cross-stitch.

Who ever would have thought so many people would enjoy fiber arts AND Super Mario World?

The day I discovered nerdcraft I was happy as hell, I tell ya what.

(Granted that was probably earlier than most people realize.)

Wow! Hello, new desktops!

Also, I maintain that pajamas can be a nerdy gift, in the context in which they grant you the opportunity to say "... Although I am technically in my pajamas."

I don't even know what Hyrule is from and I think that's an awesome map. Plus, Moon Man is watching you, and he is NOT happy. He's like a pissed-off Ceiling Cat.

Hyrule is from the Legend of Zelda. The Angry Moon is a rather looming presence in Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask--it's due to crash into the town you're in three days from now, and in order to stop it you have to keep looping back to the beginning of those three days until you've accomplished all the tasks you need to stop it. The darn thing just hangs in the sky above you through the whole game with that murder face coming at you. If you look up at it for a minute, you can see it edging incrementally closer to ultimately destroying you.

Dude. Those are awesome. I love all those enemies from Super Mario World. And it's got the actual maps from SMB3! EDIT:and SMW!

Having the moon be the evil one from Majora's Mask is funny, considering the rest of that poster is clearly devoted to oldschool 8-bit Zelda (the bottom is the overworld from the original, and the top is the world map from the underrated Adventure of Link, am I right?).

If you look at one of the details on his site, you can see that the SMB3 map is interspersed with the racetracks from Super Mario Kart, too!

The one on the far right above Dinosaur Island is the Super Mario RPG overworld map. My brother says that was the big selling point to get it for me.

Most of the Hyrule one is from old-school Zelda, yes--"as seen in the NES/Famicom Zelda games"--but the islands in the east are the ones from Wind Waker. So I suppose it's an amalgam.

(Also, I understand the detail on the bottom half is actually a perfectly accurate player's guide, with item and dungeon locations all mapped out!)

The Kart courses too? Sweet.

The Wind Waker islands? But Hyrule is submerged in that one! One of those islands is even the top of Death Mountain IIRC. Argh! Homestuck has me chronologically flummoxed enough already.

Yeah, the bottom half is definitely the complete map from the first game. I recognize it from the one printed in Nintendo Power. This is making me want to go play some oldschool Zelda. But I'm already in the middle of a game of Chrono Trigger, and I kinda wanted to lay in on Secret of Mana next because I haven't played that in forever. Decisions decisions...
