So my sister and I have just been to see John Carter, and now we're getting us some Awesome Pizza and gelato to take home, just about to pay when whoa!--my credit card flies out of my hands and inserts itself directly into the crevice between two counters.

ME: Drat!

GELATO GIRL: Oh, no! That's never happened before! I'm so sorry!

ME: Not your fault. I think I sort of threw it, there.

GELATO GIRL: *peering into crevice* I see it! But I can't reach it. I'd need something like a pencil, but longer …

ME: *rummaging in bag* Like a magic wand?

GELATO GIRL: There is no need to be sarcastic—

ME: AHA!

GELATO GIRL: —Wait, you meant an actual magic wand?

ME: Yup! Mahogany with a maple handle!

MY SISTER: Why do you even have that?

ME: I like to twirl it when I'm thinking. Here we go …

*I wedge the wand between the counters. With a little jiggling I manage to pop the credit card loose*

MY SISTER: Hooray!

GELATO GIRL: Good thing you had that.

ME: Indeed! Seven years of carrying this thing finally pay off! Oh, they laughed at me—

MY SISTER: And rightly so.

ME: True. But it turns out you never know when a magic wand will come in handy!

… Now if only I could justify my ocarina …

Ha! That is awesome!

What'd you think of John Carter?

It was a lot of fun! I have yet to read the books, but I enjoyed the movie in an Avatar sort of way. John himself was a bit boring, but the world was entertaining.

On a really esoteric note, I was kind of hoping to see the Tharks use their four arms more. I am a sucker for watching that sort of thing. (Weirdly enough, the people who make it look coolest are the Futurama animators with Elzar, the Neptunian chef.) They had a few good bits, but not quite enough.

Cool. I've seen it getting panned all over the place, but I had a lot of fun watching it, so I'm kind of curious about any other reactions I can find to it. Two of the few positive reviews that I have seen were from people who are fans of the books, so I'm guessing it holds up pretty well in that regard.

Even though I haven't seen Avatar, that was the first comparison that came into my mind, too: Fun B-Movie with a big Special Effects Budget.

And yeah, I totally wanted to see more use of all four arms.

EPIC WIN! I brought my sonic screwdriver in to work one day when we were having trouble with a set, but I forgot - it doesn't work on wood. ;(

Pretty fun! Definitely shiny, and I loved the aliens. I'll have to read the book now to see how it compares ...

You can always justify an ocarina... with VOLUME.

John Carter was fun, wasn't it? Woola is the best lizard monster dog.

...wait, you twirl a stick to help you think, too? O_o I thought I was the only person who did that.

He reminded me strongly of an uglier version of Poochy from Super Mario World 2, for some reason.

Yeah, I wave it and jab it and twirl it. I dunno, it just helps me focus. If it's true for other people, too, maybe there's a completely nonFreudian reason behind magic wands, after all! Granny Weatherwax will be pleased.

Yeah, when I was little it started as twirling like a baton, but now I wave it in circles. It's kind of compulsive of me, really.
