You know the REALLY funny thing?

Last Saturday I finally found a book I've been wanting to read for years now: Spider Robinson's Callahan Chronicals. (3 books in one! WOO!)

It figures that this of all weeks would be the one where I start reading a 35-year-old book whose basic premise is that a bunch of guys sit around talking about their FEEEELINGS, don't it?

Oh man, that is SO not really what it is, though. The Callahan Chronicles are fucking mindblowing. That may be a more or less accurate description of the basic premise, but it has NOTHING to do with what the books are really like at all. They're just amazing -- not pussified dreck at all.

Ah, but see, I didn't say the premise of sitting around talking about feelings was BAD. That's the point--this is awesome, classic sci-fi that's all ABOUT the stuff that supposedly came in just recently to "ruin" it.

Hell, no one can convince me that The Left Hand of Darkness is NOT a tremendously badass book, and it's got a grand total of one gendered character and the whole premise is people trying to understand each other.

... The more I think about it, the more narrow that ranting guy's idea of sci-fi is. I'm starting to feel sorry for him.

Did you see Scalzi's take on it?

I LOL'd.

Among the things he said was that people such as him should be put in Freeholds (they'll like that term much better than reservations ) where they can be free of girl cooties.

More here at his website, Whatever. He also has an LJ feed. I highly recommend it.

Slightly OT

Ooooh, make sure to read all the sequels and the books about Lady Sally's house, too. Some of my all-time favorites.

Shared joy in increased. Shared pain is lessened. Thus do we refute entropy.

I met my husband because of the Callahan's books. :)

One of my favorites. Love Spider. Have quotes from CC painted on my bedroom wall at my parent's house.

I could say many many things about Spider Robinson, but chief among them are 1) damn him for being born 30 years too soon and 2) isn't it a pity that Jeanne met him before I did.... *cries*
