I’m back! What’d I miss?

It’s been quite a weekend, my friends. We spent two nights at my brother’s college apartment, whose lease expires next month. It’s become quite obvious that he is not going to get his deposit back because his roommate is a disgusting drunken slob. This was not always the case—his roommate used to be a pleasant eccentric who just happened to be a disgusting slob—but over the last year the dude has been spiralling steadily downhill. As far as we know, he hasn’t been sober for two months.

This meant that we had another mission added to the log: warn this friend’s dad that his son is well down the road to alcoholism. Always a fun way to spend a weekend!

The actual fun part was seeing my cousin’s new baby and his older brother the GIANT BABY,* and staying with aunt and uncle in Grandma’s house for the last night. My brother and I geek like nobody’s business, and we got geek all over those two. They were a little disconcerted by our willingness to sit around reading choice Terry Pratchett bits aloud to each other while we waited for our iPods to charge before we went the rest of the way home,** but they were pretty sweet about letting us stay.

And now if I can just get the sensation that I’m still driving a car down the highway out of my system, I’m back and ready to roll.

*The kid was huge when he was born—almost as big as the “newborns” you see on TV shows. Now he looks like a pretty average-sized four-year-old. Except that he’s two. The cognitive dissonance in seeing, as far as your brain’s prototypes are concerned, a four-year-old acting like a toddler is disconcerting at best.

**When your iPod is almost out of batteries, you delay your trip to charge it. This is a rule.

I have a niece in law like that.
soto voce to the wife
"For a five year old, she's kind of whiny."
"She's two and a half..."

Check my posts for a flocked one about music from I believe Saturday or Sunday. I suspect you will heartily, HEARTILY approve, and know others (probably your brother in fact!) who also might approve.

*goes back to listening to the music involved in that supersecret post*

Once you have the music, do post your thoughts about it, because I am going NUTS wanting to nerd/geek about it and most of my friends are so totally un into hiphop that they won't even listen to nerdcore, and others only like 'serious' music, and only oooohh maybe two or three songs of his are really serious.

So I've been unable to properly geek about favorite songs.

Dr. George Tiller, one of the last two late-term abortion providers in the country, was assassinated in the sanctuary of his church during Sunday service.

Also, I got a new cell phone which is shiny and purple.

I feel all special now because I don't have to wait for my iPod batteries to charge first...I have a gadget that lets me plug my iPod into the cigarette lighter to charge WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY BROADCASTING THE MUSIC TO A FREQUENCY OF YOUR CHOICE SO YOU CAN LISTEN TO IT OVER THE RADIO. This comes in great handy when one has no cassette deck or cd player and poor radio reception in the car.

The Consort has one of those--you can even use them to charge the iPod while *not* listening to the iPod over the radio.

Same with mine. I just boggle at the fact that it can multitask that well.

My iPod car adapter keeps it charged with the cigarette lighter too, but it uses a wire instead of radio so you don't get interference (my car stereo has a jack).

If I had a jack I wouldn't be nearly as unhappy about car trips in this car...

Indeed, we have one of those as well for the Big Old Car! The only drawback is the interference. However, the cigarette lighter in the car we took is broken, so we just use a tape deck adaptor there.

Interference is, indeed, a problem.

Hey, I'm curious. You listen to a lot of music, right? Do you have a Last.FM account?

I do not! I don't even know what it is, actually.

I was at a baby shower the other day where there were a lot of little kids. The ones that were about 3-4 years old were running around freely, with their parents keeping a distracted eye on them. There was just this one mom who spent the entire afternoon following her daughter around, making sure she didn't go out into the garden ("No no, there are rocks out there!"). I thought she was being majorly overprotective, until I learnt that, although the girl was as tall as the 4-year-olds, she wasn't even 2 yet. It was indeed a strange discovery.
