Mom and Cody both called today to chat. First Mom and I talked for an hour about her trip to visit The Obscenely Big Family. The news was mostly good, interspersed with a bit of the usual bizarreness and difficulties. The best bit is that Uncle Dave has invited me to go up to Alaska any summer I like and work at the salmon bake, which would be awesome. Apparently I have a really exciting year shaping up: Kenya, the Deaflympics, the salmon bake, running away to sea. Break on through! We also talked about numerous philosophical concepts, like racism, how early input shapes so much of our personality, the nature of sexual orientation,* and why people on TV shows always lie to each other so much.
Then Cody called. I wished I could chat, but I was hanging out at Anders’ with Liz because he invited me along, but it has become apparent that he’s just being polite, so I won’t bug him again. Anyway, here’s what the Dude said:
Cody: Hey, I’m helping my roommate do a presentation on how cultures view each other, and we need a visual aid. Can you think of anything that we could show that would look weird to people from other cultures?
Amelia: Well, I have a Norwegian right here. I’ll ask him. (repeats question to Anders)
Anders: Well, you know Chief Wiggum from the Simpsons? That’s how we see all Americans.
Amelia: (repeats this to Cody) … You know, me too.
Cody: Yeah.
Amelia: The Muppets!
Cody: Ooh. That’s a good one.
Amelia: I dare you to try explaining the Muppets to people from Pakistan!
Cody: Didn’t you?
Amelia: Yeah. … It didn’t go well.
Ah, the marvels of technology. It allows us to keep in touch and share these important thoughts.
*For some reason everybody thinks I’m lesbian today. I don’t feel any more so than the usual twelfth or so, though.
