Awww, [livejournal.com profile] metaquotes discovers conlanging.

Man, that makes me miss Langmaker.

Also makes me want to post my own conlanging work* again—which means I’d have to make it more cohesive than it is right now. But maybe I can start giving little mini-commentaries on interesting aspects of them in here, at least.

Because I know everyone is just dying to hear about it. Aren’t you?

*Current challenge: Figure out words/phrases/ways to describe “upside-down” and “inside-out” in various languages. Except the color one, since qazhus have top-bottom symmetry and different kinetic sense and thus have no concept of upside-down.

Hey, I'm game!

(says the guy who started a "series" of posts on one of his conlang projects, what, more than a year agoʔ̦ and...yeah)

I'm quite pleased with the reaction to that metaquote. I thought there was a chance some people may be amused by the My Little Pony connection, but I wasn't expecting so many to identify with the language creation. The Secret Vice is not so uncommon! (at least among the geekular sort)

*grin* I've introduced it to people sometimes--and yeah, it's pretty much that reaction: "Other people do it to? There's a WORD for it?" Then they tell you they've been doing it since they were six. But a metaquote's a good way for a lot of people to discover it--nice job. It's fun to be the one to introduce people, isn't it?

(Also, I was the one who started conlanging when a random Super Mario story I was writing as a kid demanded a line of "Yoshese." So Ponish does not surprise me.)

Well, I'll try to post, if I come up with anything worthwhile!

BTW, did my custom punctuation show up correctly? I'm curious.

Conlanging is really neat. I'm actually trying to construct a language right now with a friend. However, as neither of us are linguists, it is progressing rather slowly. :\ I'd actually really love to know how you're doing yours.

I recommend checking out Mark Rosenfelder's Language Construction Kit and Pablo David Flores' How to Create a Language. Both are excellent beginners' resources.

Thank you! I'll check those out. They look interesting, but choosing the sounds that are a part of the language is a bit beyond me. The vocabulary is just beyond my comfort zone. :\ I'll keep working though. :)

I would like to study up on conglanging myself, I have a lot of loose ideas and some words but not enough to make a cohesive language out of 'em. But first I need to work on my attention span...

Please can have conlang posts?

I want to know about it. It always interests me, though my only foray into linguistic invention was to create a straight-up code to leave notes to myself in.

Very dying to hear about it -- really.

I tried making a new language in junior high (before the rocks cooled...) but I don't recall getting very far.

You already know I adore language nerdery of most types, and I've yet to see an exception to that rule coming from you.
