4. When do you take the tree down?

For the last few years it has been, conveniently, right after I go back to school, so I don’t have to put up with it. At least, that’s what they tell me. All I can say is it does indeed go down sometime between January and March. I will narrow it down to “whenever Mom gets completely sick of not being able to sew because we took down her workbench to put up the tree.”

My favorite part of getting rid of the trees, though, is seeing all the signs at various random city lots saying “DON’T DUMP YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE HERE, GODDAMN” which invariably have at least eight Christmas trees piled in front of them.

I want to know why taking the tree down isn’t as much fun as putting it up.  I mean, yeah, post-holiday letdown, but is that the only thing?

EDIT: Whoops, left[info]queenlyzard's response up!  This is what I get for blogging when dead tired.

We always have to take the tree down as soon as possible, because our younger cat thinks that a Christmas tree is a kitty jungle gym. (He actually has knocked trees down.)

He was what lead to my mother finally getting an artificial tree -- she was already annoyed that trees in Nebraska weren't the same kind of trees she grew up with, and didn't smell strongly, but the cat sealed the deal.

Putting up a tree, you get to have fun deciding where to put various ornaments. Taking it down, you're just putting them in a box.

I actually don't mind taking down a Christmas tree, provided that it's an artificial tree instead of a live one. With live ones, I just find it too depressing that this lovely little tree that I've been bonding with for roughly a month is now just getting thrown away, that it's literally become garbage. It used to make me so sad when I was a kid that I would actually CRY and mourn its passing. Taking down a synthetic one, though, that's kind of enjoyable because I get to pat it as I put it in its box, and wish it well for another year.

...What? There nothing weird about that! :P
