I think my dad may be losing his hearing.

In fact, I am pretty damn certain of it, because if he wasn’t losing it before he turned up his Doobie Brothers to 11, HE SURE AS HELL IS NOW.

I’m upstairs wearing earplugs and my feet hurt because the floor is shaking and the music’s still too loud.

And that, boys and girls, is why I’m learning ASL before I go deaf.   It’s only a matter of time.

At my house, Dad playing his music too loud was "a day that ended with Y". I always used ear phones and I was too scared to turn them up too loud.

I think I remember him telling me to turn the TV down once, which, considering that he'd shake the house with his stereo system, was really more funny than anything.

The other night, my boyfriend's father made us watch Donizetti's "The Daughter of the Regiment" on dvd. The volume was fine whenever the performers were just speaking, but every time they broke into song... ouch. For the first time in my life, I wished Nathalie Dessay didn't have the impressive ability to hit those high notes so loud. And I couldn't think of a polite way to ask our host to turn it down, so I just sat through it and wondered what the neighbours were thinking about a family who plays songs like "Salute to France" full blast.

I like really heavy music, but I don't listen to it particularly loud, because I already have some hearing problems. So this leads to situations at work where I'm saying things like "Could you guys turn that down a bit up there. I can't hear my Death Metal." ;)
