For a while I’ve been meaning to ask y’all where your usernames come from, but I keep forgetting.  Then lo, this starts popping up on my friends page anyway!

I’ll go first:

 

1. This gets explained on my profile page, but no reason I can’t repeat it here. A padparadscha is a pinkish-orange variety of corundum (which is sapphire). It’s named after a Sanskrit term, padma raga, which means “color of a lotus blossom.”  It’s my favorite color, and I love colorful gemstones. Also, it was not taken.

 

2. Name where? My name is Amelia, because Mom’n’Dad thought I “looked like an Amelia.”  On my profile it says my name is Amuddya, which is the closest my Tae Kwon Do teacher ever got to saying my name and which I now use when talking to myself.

 

3. “The Desert Mermaid” is disgustingly rife with personal symbolism, but basically, I love the ocean and the American Southwest desert, the latter of which I grew up in, and it’s a sign that I’m a bit eccentric. Also, I collect mermaids. It seemed appropriate.

 

4. “Friends.” A lot of you are.

 

5. That would be a cropped version of this image, which Lychee drew of me after I introduced her to the Alien movies. It’s an awesome drawing, much better than a photo of me and yet still personal, and it was flattering to be thought of enough to be illustrated. And also, it serves as a warning to anyone foolish enough to cross me: anger me, and I will unleash my xenofairies upon you.

Hee. My username is the name most people know me by. I've gone by CJ for ages. Tremlett is my married name. When asked what the CJ stands for, my traditional answer is Chris Johnson or Cthulhu Junior, take your pick. *g* (The Johnson is the reason why I took my husband's name when we got married.)

My full first name is Christine, which I hate, and which only exists because my mother thought Chris was too short for a birth certificate. Chris is a combination of being a name my mom liked, and the name of one of the main characters in The Magnificent Seven.

My journal title is "Not all those who wander are lost" and most people know where that comes from, and given the number of places I've lived, it fits.

My friends page is just friends, partly because I never bothered to change it and partly for the same reason yours is.

My default (this icon) is a photo of a dragonfly a friend of mine too, color-modified to fit my current journal theme, and I like the phrase on it. I love dragonflies.

1. My username is ruisseau because it's French for brook. My old username was hlynna, Old English for brook. The name Lynn is derived from the word hlynna, and my middle name is Lynne, capische? :)

1. I'm horrible at choosing usernames for anything. Inevitably they all end up different on whatever site I need one for, since I never like the last one I used. I wanted my LJ name to be something descriptive of myself, and I am indeed a redhead. But in grade 6, some kid in grade 9 (who was a friend of the guy that my entire friendbase had a crush on) nicknamed me "The Redheaded Bitch" for reasons I've since forgotten. How he knew that's who I'd grow up to be, I have no idea. But I figured that LJ might not let me put "bitch" in my name, and I have a few conservative friends who disapprove of the swearing, so I dropped the "b" and opted for an underscore instead. Either that or it's an allusion to Marilyn Monroe, take your pick.

2. My name is Kerrin because everyone in my family is named after another member of our extended family. I'm Kerrin after my aunt, and Alice after my maternal grandmother.

3. My journal title is "The Thought-Book" because that's basically what it is, on a digital scale. The sub-title exists because I was on a huge Pete Wentz kick and I enjoy poetic bullshit.

4. My friends page ("Partners in Time") is a play on "partners in crime". Because they are all of these.

5. My (current) default icon is a lyric from a My Chemical Romance song of the same name. All five of my icons are song titles by different artists. I chose the MCR one because a) I like the colour scheme and b) it's a song that I can listen to for hours and not get tired of.

1. My LJ username is skadi98 because "Skadi" is the winter goddess in Nordic Mythology. I loved to play "Age of Myhtology", where I met Skadi. She's the first goddess I heard she's divorced xD.

The "98" is for 1898, a special year for me, for my two favorite artists, Escher and Magritte, born in this year.

3. My Journal Names is Gen 1898 because Generation 1898: Escher and Magritte born in the same year. And other interesting persons borned in this year. It's my manga proyect's name.

4.My Friends Page is "Alianzas" (alliances), because "friend" a fake word. I never feel a "truth friend", and how I don't meet materialy the persons in the internet, I don't feel sure to say theim "friend".
Well, I feel good find interesting persons in internet.

5.My default userpic is a detail of a Alphonse Mucha's paint because I love the real gaze in the girl's face. She's pensative as I am in all day xD

2. Well, I won't tell my real name, but I'll say the "why".
My zodiac symbol is "Aries". My father give me a name reference to Aries because he guess "I am a girl for the stars" or I will travel in the space. He's so cute.

1. My username is "nobleplatypus" because, as anyone who has watched "Dogma" should know, the nobility of platypi is irrefutable.

2. My name is "Little Albatross" because I <3 "Firefly". Haven't watched it in a while, but I kind of keep forgetting that subname option exists, so I never think to change it.

3. My journal is titled "I'm Nobody! Who are you?" because I went on a brief Emily Dickinson kick and did my whole LJ up with quotes from her poetry. Plus, I can totally relate to a woman who locks herself in her room and writes obsessively instead of trying to deal with the real world.

4. My friends page is called "a breeze" because I was making all my links into a few lines from one of her shorter poems (I think the final line has something to do with spring, but I haven't read it in a while), and that's just where it fit.

5. My default userpic is Helena from "Mirrormask" looking up at the Really Useful Book, because I love books and "Mirrormask" and things that flutter about and then land on you.

1. My username is alexvdl because it's my name an dthe initials of my last name.
2. My name is Alexander Christopher von der Linden because that's what my parents named me? I was named after Alexander the Great, although it later turns out that my grandfather's middle name is also Alexander. My last name I got from my father, because most of America still follows it's patriarchial roots. The only time i've considered changing my name is when I had to sign like thirty six sheets of paper with both my full printed name and my full cursive signature. That's why I usually sign Alex v.
3. My journal is titled Director of Damnation because when stephinextremis and I were discussing positions in the underworld, we decided that this would be a good job position for me to have. I think it was related to the two thoughts "It's better to rule in hell than serve in heaven," and "If you're good you go to heaven, if you're really good you become an Angel, therefore if you're bad you go to hell, and if you're real bad you get to be a demon."
4. My friends page is called Alexvdl's friends because it's my username and my friends page?
5. My default userpic is me in a bowler hat because that is just about the best picture of myself I have. The grin/smirk fits me about perfectly.

1. My username has always seemed to me as if it should have some funny/interesting story behind it, but really, I was in a hurry when I signed up for LJ and it was the first phrase that popped into my head.

2. The "name" portion of my LJ is filled out to be my username, because the place that it used that field on my layout at the time was a place where I wanted "10cents" to appear instead. My REAL name is Jennifer, except I started going by Jeni when I was about 15, and it stuck around because that's the age that I met my husband, and HE started calling me that. On a day-to-day basis I get called Jennifer, Jeni, and Jen, because everyone except for me has a preference.

3. "All the relevant data you never needed to know" is a phrase that I just kind of typed up randomly one day when I was re-doing my LJ layout. I like it because blogs and such feel so self-important, and yet really the vast majority of the time they're filled with pointless nonsense. Pointless nonsense that we cannot seem to do without once we get hooked on it.

4. "Friends", because I couldn't come up with a pithy title that didn't make me cringe from the cheesiness of it.

5. It's a modified photo that I took a long, long time ago of myself using a tripod and a self-timer. I had found a random photo-prompt website where they listed "blue" as the current prompt, and so I set up a shot in my parent's blue living room, on their blue couch, wearing a blue pair of pants and a blue t-shirt, holding a fat blue book. Then when I got around to getting the picture off of the camera I found out that I hadn't adjusted the settings to have the proper white-balance for indoor lighting, and my forehead was BRIGHT RED. So I started mucking with the colors, and I ended up with a picture that looked to be as if it was an old, almost Victorian kind of photograph, and I thought that THAT looked hilarious with the shot, so I just kind of went with it.

Username: Blackbyrd2. For a brief while, shortly after losing faith, I spent some time exploring Wicca before discardung it for the same reasons I discarded all other faiths. Wasn't so nice as Raven or Wolf or anything like that, but for that reason I felt more like it was real. Just a simple, unassuming blackbird. I still find blackbirds constantly in my life when times are interesting, and it's a harmless conceit to think they're hanging about watching me. I modified the spelling for uniqeness purposes. I've been using it since about 1999. The 2 is a whole other story.

My name is Albert Guy, named after my grandfathers. Interestingly enough, neither one is actually a blood relative, I think. I know Albert wasn't, (who used to pinch me so hard it hurt) and I don't think Guy was either. What kind of fucked up person names their kids after grouchy step-grandparents??? It's no wonder I have issues.

The Journal is The Terran News Network because for a few years, I was arrogant enough to think I was actually bringing news to people. (And, of course, being on the net, it's worldwide, not provincial. I tried to focus on bringing other nation's viewpoints to my posts.) Well, to be fair, I did post a lot of articles which might not have hit people's radar for a couple more days otherwise. Anyway, I never changed it because there's no other real point to my journal these days. Once I get a new focus, I might change it. We'll see.

Friends, because I've never changed it, and because I'm pretty proud of all my friends.

This IS my default usericon, partly because it looks like me, and partly because so many of my old posts with default icons are angry, angry rants. :)

1. My username is "AlietF" because it's the penname I've always used. Or, rather, a shortened version of it. I liked it so much it became my LJ alter-ego too.

2. My name is AF because those are my initials, and it's my internet handle.

3. My journal is titled Adventures of the Vertically Challenged because, well... I'm short. And it sounded better than The Adventures of Short-ra: Princess of Tiny.

4. My friends page is called Taller People because I'm the smallest out of all my friends. And I have a fixation on my height that refuses to go away. It's a psychosis, really.

5. My default userpic is the one I'm using here because it's a reference to Final Fantasy, and cracks me up.

My username is pixel39 because pixel was already taken, it's been my nickname since high school because there are a million and one Jennifers out there. The 39 was arbitrarily assigned by an ISP, and I've just kept it for various and sundry ids and addresses, especially those that are required to be six characters or longer.

My birth name is Jennifer, my use name is pixel, for the abovementioned reason of a million and one Jennifers (THE most popular girl's name in the US from 1970 until 1984). My birth name, IIRC is what it is because Mom liked it. I do self-refer as Jen, though.

My journal is "Infrequent Lucid Intervals", which is a play on a quote from Don Quixote. Sancho Panza observes that his master is "a muddle-headed fool, with frequent lucid intervals,". Mostly it's because I frequently only make sense to me, or so everyone assures me. I think they're just afraid that if I explain, I might make sense to *them*, and that scares them.

My friends page isn't titled specially either.

My default icon is a b/w shot from a photo shoot I did with the Consort a few years ago. I'm wearing my signature black fedora in it, a hat which I would wear more often if it didn't moosh down my bangs so much.

2. My name is Mark because I really like the character from RENT and think I am a lot like him in personality, and I've always liked the name.

1. My username is kurupira because it refers to a mythological creature that protects the rainforest and associated animals. which I would like to do.
2. My name is Ashley because my dad thought it was creative; of course, I wound up being one of 17 Ashleys in my high school class.
3. My journal is titled Besame Mucho, which I've had for so long I don't really remember why I chose it, but it's the name of one of my favorite Beatles songs, so that's where it originated.
4. My friends page is called kurupira's friends, I guess by default because I never changed it to anything special.
5. My default userpic is my dog Sammy, whom I love, because I've been incredibly lazy about changing it. I don't even remember what it was before, but in high school I used to change it all the time.

1) Username: it's probably best to just c&p from my journal
"Well, let's see how to explain this-- it's a little bit of a long story. I'm cautious about using my real name online these days, but I can tell you that it rhymes with "iguana" (but not with banana). When I was a child, many people attempted to rhyme my name humorously with "banana", which invariably involved mispronouncing something. This offended my youthful sense of proper English, so I deliberately gained "iguana" as a nickname. Anyways... this led to the nickname of "lizard girl" or variations thereof. As you can guess, I enjoy playing with words, so I changed "lizard" to "lyzard" on analogy to the term "wyrm" (for dragon-- one of my most-beloved mythological creatures). The full name "Queen Lyzard I of Commaedia 11" refers to a sci-fi/fantasy world that I spent most of my childhood playing with mentally. I doubt there's enough material for actual stories, but I've written numerous descriptions of the world itself. I also use "Lyzard_42" as a screenname, in honor of the incomparable Douglas Adams.

2) Real Name (which I do not use in my journal, ever): is Aiyana, because my mom found it in the "New Age Baby Name Book" and liked it. It's listed there as a Native American name meaning "eternal bloom." In hunting about online for more specific roots, however, I've run across articles claiming that it is in fact Indian (not Native American), and also shows up in Africa, which explains why most people who hear my name before they meet me assume I'm not white :)

3) My journal is titled "None of this Nonsense, Please", because it's the sign posted outside Morwen's house in Patricia Wrede's Enchanted Forest Chronicles. Favorite quote of favorite character of one of my favorite books :)

4) My friends page is currently called "friends" because I was boring and didn't think of anything else and didn't even think about the fact that I could change it. Now that you mention it, I may do so.

5) My default userpic is a picture of my roommate's dog (whom I adore), because he is cuter than I am!
