There’s something extremely comfortable about having a grotty little old penny-dreadful-type Golden Age science fiction book with a kilt-wearing guy with a helmet and a mysterious alien beauty on the cover. The smell alone is great.
Okay, so they’re not kidding. Poul Anderson is the goddamn master of worldbuilding. Screw George R.R. Martin. I’m reading The Man Who Counts,* and it’s incredible. Poul’s got the whole damn planet figured out. He worked out its density, and the atmospheric density too, and the composition of the planet, and the life cycles, and all these different cultures that could live in different regions, as well as a possible evolutionary scenario (at least according to the science of the time) and some pretty fascinating characters within this world.
He wins.**
It makes me want to go and build some more planets. Good thing I’ve got time now. So this week, between sewing and crafty-ass projects, I’m gonna play me some god.
*The book described above was his old Star Ways, but The Man Who Counts is a better example.
**His women could be a little better written, but I can fix that.
