I have acquired two dolls this spring break, and it’s only Sunday.
The mermaid doll has arrived. She’s smaller than I thought, and a bit more developed than the others. It’ll take a little finagling in the form of a rolled-up sock or something to prop her into the wheelchair, but that’s all right.
Her name is Hweiso. It means “breeze” in my mermaid conlang, Hu*eetp. That’s all I’ve got so far, but I’m working on it.
Also, today I assimilated 妹’s old American Girl of Today* doll, because she (妹, not the doll) has never been much for dolls—so I suppose it’s cheating to say I got two, because this one’s been around for years. Her name is now Summer, and I’m in the process of baking her a pair of Sculpey hearing aids (with twist ties to form the rubber tubing). I wanted a doll local to me, so she lives in Emigration Canyon. Her mom works at Hogle Zoo, and they like to take biking, camping, and hiking trips to the Southwest and to national parks. I’m trying to decide if she goes to a mainstream school or another sort of school for the deaf (although finding information on SLC deaf schools from the internet is not easy, so I’d probably have to make one up).
The next doll I get will either become Mary Read the pirate at an early age, when she was disguised as a boy to con an inheritance out of her grandmother, or it will be Amber’s twin brother Danny. Either way, it’s gonna get crowded.
One of these days I ought to give out a background on each of my dolls, because some of them are characters in my stories,** and others are just free-floating exercises in character development that will probably wind up in stories. And I should take photos, because sometimes there’s a fluke and I actually wind up making a pretty good outfit for one or the other of them.
Plus, they’re so cute.
Oh, quit looking at me like that. I’m gonna go see how those hearing aids did.
*Or possibly Today Girl, or Just Like You doll, or something. I lost track of what they’re called now.
**Loke, for example, later will wind up becoming a central character in my Doctors … in … SPACE! stories, and Kuen and Amber inhabit an interesting multiverse full of wizards and hobbits and sprites and Santa Claus and washed-up rock-and-roll bands who get abducted by aliens. Really.
