Liz’s Birthday!
Today, Liz and I both went through rites of passage. Liz has been twenty-one years old for some hours now; I, for the first time, spent ten minutes up to my elbow in the toilet tank negotiating a treaty with the plug.
This may actually have been more glamorous than my 21st birthday, when I spent the evening listening to my aunts discuss the ever-exciting Family News and trying to talk like a pirate to them with indifferent success. Today I felt absurdly triumphant when I hooked the little metal thingy through the little rubber thingy and convinced the toilet to start flushing again, a major achievement for such a stereotypical gurl.
But that is beside the point. The point is that I have lost the short window of opportunity I had to lord it over Liz that I can buy alcohol and she can’t, and that is worth celebrating. Drinks all around, and I plan to be the only sober one left by tomorrow evening!*
As an early commencement of the festivities, I showed her her first Bollywood movie, Kal Ho Naa Ho. She was thrilled with the whole thing, because Bollywood is shameless in its entertainment values, although I tend to get all anthropological on your ass when I'm watching one.** And Josh introduced us to Captain Picard’s Vaudeville number,*** the true icing on the cake.
Actually, he’s also baking her a cake. Josh, not Patrick Stewart. Josh is nice.
Happy birthday, Liz!
*Except Josh claims he can’t get drunk.
**Actually, I do this with any movie.
***It starts at about 5:20 into the video, after the credits roll.
