Today’s Embarrassing True Story

Last night I slept with the light on.

Because of statues.

See, I watched episode 3.10 of the new Doctor Who, “Blink.”* Possibly it’s my new favorite episode—while it made very little sense,** the idea of quantum mechanics in biology made me squeak with glee. Aliens that turn to stone when you look at them—very cool.

However, because I’ve been in a heightened emotional state lately, the way the show was shot, and the idea of statues sneaking up on you when you’re not looking, scared the bejabbers out of me.  I can handle everything else I’ve seen in movies and TV, but the weeping angel statues got me.

So I did something I haven’t done in a long time: I slept with the light on. Because you Never Know when you’ll have to wake up and defend yourself from a psychopathic weeping angel statue by staring at it.

*Stephen Moffat is far and away my favorite Who writer.  There’s just something weirdly charming about his scenarios.

**The hallmark of this show.

OH GOD that one was scary. I adore Moffat. His dialogue kicks ASS. Best line: "This is my timey-wimey detector. It goes "bing" when there's stuff."

I propose we track down Michael Piller and EVERY SINGLE STAR TREK: VOYAGER writer and make them write that line a hundred times on a chalkboard. Then push them down and take their lunch money.

When my closest friend and I watched that, there was one scene in particular that had me nearly pissing my pants (I won't say what because of spoilers and the like).

I just watched Human Nature, and I recently finished the book as well. Paul Cornell is a pretty cool guy, but you can definitely tell he never would have had his shot as a Who writer if he weren't the son in law of one of the producers of the classic series. I like that his beliefs jibe with mine and he works them in subtlely. Too bad he sucks at writing.

So I had all of the new season of Doctor Who on my computer.

And when I got home, I handed it over to my sister and she sat around watching it.

Because of that episode, she ended up watching the entire season in a day. She'd been sitting there at about 11 or 12, telling herself that she'd just watch one more episode and then go to bed... and that was the episode she watched.
And then she couldn't sleep, so she went on ahead and watched the rest of them.

We both agree that it is one of the best Doctor Who Episodes ever. And the scariest. Though for me, the Ood still scare the crap out of me. It's the showing up outside of doors you don't expect them to be on the opposite side of. Very "monster in the closet".

As a child, I had that reaction to an episode of Star Trek TNG-- the one where Geordie gets infected by an alien creature thingy on this planet and almost turns into an invisible critter.

Now, young as I was, I didn't quite follow all the plot bits, but afterwards I always remembered this part on the holodeck where they keep replaying this tape to figure out what's going on, and finally someone notices a shadow with no one casting it. The reason your mention of statues reminded me was that the computer extrapolates from the shadow to a source and places a vaguely man-shaped statue right in the middle of where they are standing around, where the invisible alien was... and it creeped me out so much I spent the rest of the night freaking out every time anything threw a shadow on the wall!
