Right, so, in lieu of content, of which I have none today because I’ve spent the weekend doing boring shit, have a five minute Golden Compass trailer.

Pardon me for a minute while I drool.

Okay. On to business.

Note the bit about how Lyra’s world is run by the “Magisterium,” and that they are theorizing about a parallel universe that isn’t run by it.  That world is probably ours, which suggests two possibilities:

  1. Asriel is wrong about our universe’s lack of Magisterium, and we just call it the Church instead, or
  2. More plausibly for the squeamishness of Hollywood, the Magisterium is an Evil False Church, which has nothing whatsoever to do with any of the Good True Churches here.
I’m guessing that it’s some variation of the second, and the war will be to free Lyra’s world of the Magisterium but to save ours from their invasion. If I were going to spinelessly subvert the story to cover my ass from the privileged religious majority,* that’s how I’d do it. Then I could claim that it was just part of the story and not a metaphor in any way.

Either way, I am so ready to see this.

*“But Amelia, how do you really feel?”

If right-wingers protested HP but DON'T protest this, my low opinion of them will sink lower. I've been wondering what options the movie makers will take to deal with the 'heresy', and I think that implying there is an evil false church/god will be the most probable...wusses.

On the other hand, all my bitter cynicism is reduced to giggling and cooing "PANSERBJORN!"

Coulter looks perfect. I always pictured Asriel as a bit hotter. Lyra...too curly. Texan? Perfect. Watch me be shallow. :)

Not all right wingers. Just the fanatic ones. Personally I beleive that fanatics of any creed, color, or religion give the rest of us a bad name.

Hell, my Dad is born and bred upper middle class Republican with homophobic tendencies, and he's reading the books and haws seen all the movies.

Sorry, I misspoke - you're absolutley correct. It wasn't even the right-political wing so much as the religious extremist group, and as you say, extremists of any stripe...

Your commentary on their appearances mirrors my own, although I have two things to add.

Asriel: Needs darker hair. I'm not sure why, but but he's not right in my head unless he's got black hair.
Mrs. Coulter: I believe Philip Pullman actually cast Nicole Kidman in his head when he wrote the books. However, I want her in red. Bright, flaming red. She was always in red to me ... did he mention that, or was that just me?.
