This week, with two long and involved papers looming over me and two more essay exams approaching on the horizon, my brain’s top-level personalities held a conference and decided that now would be a good time for some intensive worldbuilding.
So in between assessing the statistical representations of blog register, reading articles on the Roma, giving a Powerpoint presentation on paternal investment, and trying to find something in the medical journals that would help me with my twins paper, I am poring over astronomy books, figuring out moon densities, constructing animals with the help of some biology-related websites, and working out color symbolism for a particular culture’s jewelry. The things I should be doing are not fun; the things I don’t need to be doing are very much so. And yet, they seem remarkably similar in terms of effort if you’re a layman.
Mark Twain said it best. “Work consists of whatever a body is obliged to do, and play consists of whatever a body is not obliged to do.” And as I’m not obliged to whip out my calculator and work on orbital periods, I’m all over them.
Party on.
