Right? They're loud and sudden, and the pressure change is unpleasant! It's perfectly rational, if you ask me!
Funnily enough, my fear doesn't extend to helium balloons, but they're the ones we actually do have to fear in the Dome: if they're let go, they float up to the ceiling, and somebody has to climb up all 50 feet of the damn thing and get them. We can't pop them with projectiles for fear of damaging the reflective surface, either. I always feel like a ridiculous cartoon villain when I confiscate toddlers' balloons for the duration of the show
