Eh, I grew up reading Bruce Coville books, (and Animorphs, until the series got too weird) so I had much more refined morals to go on. I barely remember "Love You Forever", and it always struck me as an exercise in sentimentality that wasn't meant to be held up as realistic behavior (like all children's book behavior. I mean, in real life Chicken Little would have been committed). I don't know from any rainbow fish, but what think we can get from its amazon page is that you can destroy anything, especially something as simple as children's literature, by overanalyzing it.
I do think Matthew 19:21 is a good candidate for a bumper sticker reference, though my favorite is Genesis 11:6.
