Are you familiar with Nancy Kress? I really enjoyed Beggars in Spain. Babies engineered so they don't need sleep and the rest of the world's reaction to them, starting in their infancy with the parents having an increased tendency toward abuse because they NEVER GET TO SLEEP.

Elizabeth Moon has some pretty good space opera stuff. Might be worth a read. I like her take on Most Dangerous Game.

If you don't mind that the books all have plots interlaced with romance, Sharon Miller and Steve Lee's Korvald series has some fun alien races and cultures. I go back and forth between loving them and having trouble reading them depending on how strongly ace I'm feeling at any point, though, because they're definitely all love stories as well as sci-fi stories.
