Boz Scaggs is one of my parents’ tastes that got transferred to me. He sings like he’s got a mouthful of peanut butter, but he pulls it off. The music’s kind of jazzy soft rock, or something. The song I was listening to at the time, “Follow That Man,” is from his album Some Change; another I like is Dig.

I was at the prince’s ball, where the men murmured soft invitations to the ladies, who batted their eyelashes and flitted like butterflies in their bright dresses. But all was for naught with me. I remained to the side, bored at the flock of noblemen surrounding me and promising me jewels and riches—and then, a trumpeting fanfare sounded. We all turned, and there you were, framed in the light of the setting sun, your gown alight like the stars, your mask a fascinating hint at your magnificent features.
