A couple of recent versions of the story are dear to my heart, though much like you the original book/musical/Disney movie didn't sit well with me either. I have a big old soft goofy spot for Hook (it is not a good movie, lets be real, but it is an unrelentingly fun one) and I feel like Brom's The Child Thief is a retelling that seems to address a few of the main problems with the narrative as well as introduce dark urban fantasy into it - not to mention is disturbing as fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.
