I remember my copy of Podkayne had both Helinlein's original-written ending and the re-write on editorial fiat (as well as fan essays debating the issue). Basically, the original ending was viewed as too severe for a 'kids' book', since the the narrator dies when fleeing their kidnappers, since she runs back for the dead guard animal's offspring after her little brother sets a time bomb, and she's too close to the blast. It would make a good English discussion about stories and happy endings. I don't think 9th graders will have a problem with it -- I read it in 9th grade.
