I don't think the crown's soldiers are keeping the roads as clear as they might. You know what the crown soldiers are like, they're never around when you need their protection from brigands, only when they think you have pipeweed. >_>
Our glorious people would certainly deserve protection after throwing a hobbit maid to the ravening wolves of the world. There are definite traces of the participatory anthropologist's journey in her attempts to integrate, and to learn as well as she can before judging, but that said, I still love a man who doesn't take his own cultural imperatives for granted like this.
