The last time I read the book was last spring, so I'd forgotten about the end of Thorin, and I must admit that I got a bit distraught when I was reminded of it after seeing the film. And that is no doubt a very deliberate move by PJ & Co: turn Thorin into the Most Tragic (and Chiselled) Hero Ever, watch the audience despair as he succumbs to dragonesque greed in Film 2, and then finish him (and the fangirls) off with a hefty dose of Redemption Equals Death in Film 3. It's going to be epic. :D
(Also, I bought a Hobbit calendar yesterday. My mama, who hasn't seen the film yet, took one look at Kíli and said "now HE'S hot!" ...Crikey.)
