Some great guys when it comes to exploring ideas, but many couldn't write a compelling character or engaging interaction to save their lives.
That's pretty much what I think about H. P. Lovecraft and Philip K. Dick. And it's why I prefer Dick's short stories to his novels: you can get in, get the wild ontological riff, and get out without having to slog through his inability to write engaging characters (though I have to say Ubik was a lot of fun, and The Cosmic Puppets was pretty good even though it had one really skeevy part that made me wonder things about PKD, but The Man In The High Castle is supposed to be an alt-history classic and I found it totally unreadable).
