I have convinced myself that when someone refers to a group of dinosaurs and not-really-dinosaurs as "dinosaurs," it's simply like what Spanish does when referring to a mixed-gender group--defaults to one gender. Because otherwise I would get very cranky--almost as cranky as when people refer to apes as "monkeys."
Also, I find it rather hilarious that this is a Level 2 reader--meant for children who "recognize familiar words on sight and sound out new words with help" and covering "basic vocabulary"--and it DOES include the word "pteranodon."
Obviously, though, "Batman" is basic vocabulary. The first words all children must learn to read and identify are basic shapes, colors, animals, family members, numbers, household objects, and superheroes.
