But the thing is, when I'm looking for a biological twist in a book, I'm looking for one that actually follows the tenets of biology. In every new spec fic story there are different criteria for the suspension of disbelief--the rules of the universe versus how the author plays them out. For me, stories simply have to follow their own rules, and this one gets a little muddled. I think part of the problem is exactly what you said--Tamani may not have read up on his Darwin, but in this case that makes it look like Pike hasn't either, and so the rules she makes are inconsistent.
It does have some really cool bits about sentient plants, though. When the evolution magic wand got left out, the experiments to see if she had a pulse and what she bled and how her nerves connected to the flower made me very gleeful.
