I missed out on the poll, but I would've defined geek as "someone who is very passionate about a given domain, to the point of sometimes passing for inappropriate or inadequate in other domains." Or something like that.
Reading the description of this woman's kids, I would be more tempted to apply the word "dweeb", definitely not "geek".
