Backing up is always a good idea, but the panic is over-rated. I doubt LJ is going to go down, and if it does, it won't be all of a sudden.
My siblings both have hyper-curly hair that frizzes at the least provocation. And both of them wear it long, in ponytails. Though my brother uses a gel or something on it that makes it look much nicer than whatever my sister does with hers. But she looks so much better with it short! She's stubborn, though. And my brother's wife won't let him go through the growing out phase and wants him to keep it long. Unless there's a six figure job offer that require short hair. The growing out stages are pretty horrid, though. My brother and his red-headed afro.
Me, I got wavy hair with red highlights (but I dye it much redder!). It has no wave at all when short. I lucked out in the hair department.
There are evidently some products out there that tame hair like yours. But if you're looking at short haircuts wistfully, go for the short!
