WHY DOES MAN CREATE?
Apr. 16th, 2009 05:54 pmBeen working slowly but steadily to amass a collection of glass-eye Mini American Girl dolls, because
firinel turned me to the dark side by giving me the idea that all my modification ideas would probably be cheaper with minis. (Tiny wig swaps! D’AAWWWW.) Sewing would be a challenge, though.
Trouble is, it’s hard to get hold of a glass-eye mini now. They got phased out by Mattel and replaced by an army of dolls with painted eyes and rooted hair. The facemolds changed, too. Add all this up, and they’re just awful. I’m certainly not one to leap on the great fannish bandwagon saying that everything before Mattel was better, but by god, precious, we hates the new minis with a burning passion.
Plus, on a practical scale, it’s harder to rewig a doll with rooted hair.
So it was something of a setback today when the Kirsten I’d bought on eBay showed up with, in bald contradiction to the seller’s photo, the newer characteristics. This annoys me, because it means I’m going to have to double check with sellers from now on—and I’m going to have to return Kirsten. But I am undeterred! So many characters cry out to be made that I must continue!
We’ll see if the next mini I’m getting pulls the ol’ bait-and-switch even with the double check.
By the way, if anyone’s curious, here’s a partial list of possible mini mods:
Mary Read and possible Best Friend Doll Anne Bonney*
Alanna of Trebond (the purple eyes would be difficult, but ALANNA)
Veralidaine Sarrasri
Tiffany Aching
Princess Leia Organa
Polgara
Nhamo
Sara Crewe
Ella of Frell
Hermione Granger
Belle**
Princess Jasmine
Lilo
Lyra Silvertongue/Belacqua
Sheila King and possible Best Friend Doll Jane Harriet (my characters)
My doll Kuen’s doll, Mileo
Feel free to offer any more ideas!
*I kinda wish they’d come out with an Ivy mini so I could do Mrs. Ching. Yes, I’d get a painted-eye if I had to for her.
**When the blazing hell did Belle’s eyes turn green? I’ve seen the new Disney Princess collection stuff, and I say unto Disney: I demand an explanation for this bullshit.
