Taurus Begins
Made my first pottery on the wheel yesterday!
I had fun trying out the wheel during the class, but I hadn’t managed to make anything that didn’t get smashed flat. So I went into the studio between classes yesterday and fired up a wheel for some clay wrestling, as well as a signed conversation with my friend from ASL class and some unsolicited advice on my technique from a crazy old man.*
So I mucked about with some blobs of clay and after a few false starts I made a bottle, on the theory that bottles are neat.** This was encouraging, though I sort of mucked it up getting it off the wheel. (I probably won’t keep it, but right now it’s still around just because I’m proud of my first effort.) Then I made what I’m either gonna use as a small bowl or a large coffee cup, which was much less off a blob. I think I’m getting the hang of this.
Ha! I finally have something on the shelf. Go me!
*“I started taking ceramics as an alternative to that useless counseling they were gonna make me go to!” I decided not to pursue the issue.
**I even like the word “bottle,” because to me it’s onomatopoeic. And bottles themselves just are cool. I’m not sure why; I like the shape of them.
